Chiefs trading Dee Ford to 49ers

16 March 2019

The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to trade edge rusher Dee Ford to the San Francisco 49ers, a source confirmed to ESPN's Josina Anderson.

When this deal becomes official - which can not occur until after 3 p.m. CT Wednesday at the earliest - Ford's contract is expected to be for five years and $87.5 million, according to ESPN's Josina Anderson.

Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer says the Chiefs would get a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft in the trade for Ford.

Green Bay Packers free agency: Packers sign Preston Smith
For now, let's all enjoy this unique time for the Packers as they are finally active in free agency. The #Packers aren't done: They are also signing #Bears S Adrian Amos, sources say.

The 27 year-old edge rusher looks to continue to build himself as a star in this league after last season in which he recorded career highs in tackles (55), tackles for loss (13), and sacks (13), earning himself his first Pro Bowl nod. The Chiefs had used a 3-4 defense the past five seasons, and Ford was one of their starting outside linebackers. The one-year franchise tag for linebackers is worth $15,443,000 in 2019.

Moving Ford seemed inevitable after the Chiefs made a decision to switch from a 3-4 base defense to a 4-3 under new coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, the former Giants defensive coordinator. If San Francisco is bad next year, it's a great pick. Outside of defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, the 49ers lacked a consistent pass rush.

The 49ers haven't seen much of their new pass rusher Dee Ford in his career.

Prominent athletes such as Chris Bosh and Serena Williams have been affected by blood clots in recent years. Ingram had missed the past two games after Walton said he had difficulty raising his arm without pain.

San Francisco gave Ford a contract at the top of the market despite having just two productive seasons (he logged 10 sacks in 2016, his first full year as a starter).

Adding Ford shouldn't keep the 49ers from finding another edge rusher this offseason. Obviously San Francisco believes Ford won't have a problem adjusting from a 3-4 defense. Ford was viewed as a less-than-ideal fit in the Chiefs' new 4-3 base scheme and they traded him rather than bend the system to fit his talents.

The Chiefs started this defensive rebuild previous year, when they traded up in the second round to draft defensive end Breeland Speaks. I think we're also looking for powerful players. Ford long battled the perception that he was an underwhelming first-round pick in Kansas City (23rd overall in 2014).
