Gov. Gavin Newsom to stop the death penalty in California

15 March 2019

As recently as 2016, a measure to abolish the death penalty failed, and another, aimed at speeding up executions, passed.

The truth is California hasn't really had a death penalty since 2006, when the state executed a 76-year-old legally blind diabetic in a wheelchair named Clarence Ray Allen.

When Newsom signs the executive order Wednesday, he will also order the closure of San Quentin State Prison's execution chamber and repeal the state's official lethal injection protocol.

The new governor of California yesterday suspended executions indefinitely in the state, which has more than twice as many prisoners on death row as any other.

Shawn Steele, a California representative on the Republican National Committee, said the GOP would likely use the moratorium in upcoming campaigns against Newsom and other Democrats. A repeal question also was on the ballot in 2016 with the question to speed up executions.

The governor's ban is certain to be challenged in court, but aides say his power to grant reprieves is written into the state constitution and that he is not altering any convictions or allowing any condemned inmate a chance at an early release.

He said he's considering commuting death sentences as "a next step" once state Supreme Court justices explain why they blocked 10 non-death commutations sought by former Gov. It's also costly - California has spent $5 billion since 1978 on its death row, he said. It's the same tactic he used in legalizing gay marriage in the city of San Francisco in 2004, singlehandedly (some would say) setting in motion a set of legal challenges and the Prop. 8 backlash that led to the historic Supreme Court decisions in 2013 and 2015 legalizing same-sex marriage.

Hedescribed meeting a wrongfully convicted man, Pete Pianezzi, who narrowly escaped death row and was later pardoned, and whose case was championed by Newsom's father and grandfather. "And as governor, I will not oversee the execution of any individual".

On Wednesday, Gov. Newsom announced he's halting the death penalty - giving a reprieve to some 737 death row inmates, reports The Sacramento Bee.

"A little of me died", said Klaas, a death penalty supporter. In California, voters in 2012 rejected a proposition that would have ended the death penalty - though only by a four-point margin.

"So, these are monsters", said Assemblyman Tom Lackey, R-Palmdale.

"Their system has had multiple innocence issues and is overrun with issues of racial and socioeconomic bias", said Conservatives Concerned about the Death Penalty in a statement.

Carlson also made comments that appeared to minimize statutory rape and underage marriage. The audio from Media Matters swiftly went viral.

"For the previous year, I have immersed myself in learning about the criminal justice system", Kardashian, 38, tweeted late Tuesday night. (Who, it's worth mentioning, is the ex-husband of Donald Trump Jr.'s girlfriend, Kimberly Guilfoyle.) California hasn't had an execution since 2006, when it executed Clarence Allen. "I've carved out my piece of all this".

The order calls for the immediate closure of the execution chamber at San Quentin Prison.

Runtime of Game of Thrones final season episodes revealed
Last year, news broke that the final season of the fantasy series will be bringing with it fewer, albeit super-sized episodes. The runtimes for Season 8 get progressively longer as the season unfolds, but is not uncommon for Game of Thrones .

Newsom's office said 25 condemned inmates have exhausted all of their appeals and could have faced execution if the courts approved the state's new lethal injection method.
