"Captain Marvel" Is Out Of This World, With An Inspirational Brie Larson

07 March 2019

It's a good week to be Brie Larson. When she finally takes literal flight towards the end of the movie, eyes and hair aglow with unimaginable power, it is the movie's first true moment of both visual poetry and catharsis. Larson's Vers is like someone trapped in a matrix - she has to shake off the dream of who she is to locate the superwoman she could be. We hate them now! Boo! Larson is far too eager to play her own action figure, and that proud approach doesn't leave Carol anywhere to go once her memories inevitably return. For nerds who hope to see more superhero films starring women, the stakes are agonizingly high; it's hard not to feel that a less-than-positive reception dooms not only Captain Marvel, but the female-centric stories that we hoped would come after. Disconnected from Starforce, she teams up with a young SHIELD agent named Nick Fury (a digitally de-aged Samuel L. Jackson) to ward off the impending Skrull invasion.

On the flip side, Carol's dynamic with her human friend, Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), provides the emotional core.

'Captain Marvel' is an aimless superhero slog

Ben Mendelsohn handles the role of the shapeshifting Skrulls' leader, Talos, and he's one of the better antagonists to emerge from a Marvel production. This leads to a fantastic train chase and fight sequence that spotlights LA rapid transit in a rather, well, aggressive manner. That's tens of millions more than the initial estimates, so it looks like Brie Larson's Carol Danvers is quickly going to quickly join the club of Marvel Studios superheroes who prove to be a reliable draw at the box office. Like that pesky and uber-powerful Thanos (Josh Brolin) guy in the Avengers storyline. Or is Goose a Flerken? As both the last Marvel movie to hit screens before Avengers 4: Endgame and the first film to really introduce us to Captain Marvel as a person, not just a powerhouse, it has a lot riding on its armored shoulders. "Brie Larson is worth the price of admission", writes Kristen Lopez of Culturess, while Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian cites her "fierce performance" as the film's strength. The first portion of the film where she's learning about her history on Earth (reminiscent of Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) in Guardians of the Galaxy) is tiresome and rather boring. It's two hours of breezy popcorn movie fun sprinkled with a few surprises and a deft handling of increasingly complex universe lore. Just "rock-solid." Larson remains the highlight of the film, though the plot twists aren't as effective or deep for Han as they were for some of the other reviewers. My college-age daughter agrees that Wonder Woman was a much better film, by the way.

Because the internet is a unusual place that turns cultural objects into artefacts of a never-ending cultural war, the issue of whether or not Captain Marvel is good has been waged online with the passion and dedication that people used to reserve for their families. "If we make a smaller movie again, and we will, we will know how to bring some of the stuff we have learnt on this movie to that process".

UNC’s Roy Williams falls near bench, helped off court
The university later confirmed the fall was related to his vertigo, according to play-by-play announcer Jones Angell . The win keeps UNC (24-5, 14-2 ACC) at a tie with Virginia for first place in the ACC standings.

"Carol Danvers is a good soldier until Nick Fury tells her that she's actually someone who isn't afraid to buck authority and do what's right".

The Skrulls are not who they appear to be, in more ways than one.

Waters has previously filed an inquiry for more information on Trump's finances to Deutsche Bank, which Democrats like Rep. Bolton sought to play down Saturday's announcement, however, saying the policy remained unchanged since Singapore.

The film is set to storm theaters on Friday, March 8. More jarring is that Fury's essentially the comic sidekick of "Captain Marvel", and Jackson seems happy to unwind and snuggle with the kitty-cat that wanders in and out of the movie. Suffice it to say that Marvel has been tinkering with Captain Marvel's genesis and gender since the 1980s and recently merged the character with the long-running Ms. Marvel, a.k.a. Carol Danvers.

The series, which will be based on Amyrillis Fox's upcoming memoir, will draw upon the real experiences from the memoir to tell the story of a young woman's journey in the Central Intelligence Agency and some of her undercover operations, all with the connections of her closest relationships being told.
