Trump says so-called Islamic State could be completely defeated by next week

07 February 2019

Addressing a gathering of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS in Washington, Trump said Wednesday that the us -led campaign to defeat ISIS was a "mess" before he took office in January 2017.

The Pentagon is now wrestling with questions on how the pullout can be handled, including what the USA can do to help protect its Kurdish partners and maintain the 79-member worldwide coalition aimed at eradicating ISIS. And within a year, US military commanders told the IG, ISIS would be resurgent in Syria.

He touted a list of what he said were the successes of a "bold new diplomacy" toward North Korea, including the return of American hostages and a halt in nuclear and missile testing that followed the first summit.

He claimed a minute later that ISIS had been "decimated" in Iraq and in Syria.

In December, a USA official said Trump was planning to withdraw more than 5,000 US troops in Afghanistan, triggering worries about whether a smaller force would be able to fulfill missions under way and stabilize the country. He hopes to maintain a military presence in the country despite withdrawing troops from Syria and Afghanistan. But the troops have yet to start leaving Syria, and officials subsequently have said the military exodus would unfold over several months.

Earlier this week, Trump said it was important to keep a US military presence in Iraq so that Washington could keep a close eye on Iran, according to a CBS interview aired on Sunday.

As is tradition, Trump's national televised speech was followed by a Democratic response, this time given by Stacey Abrams, who narrowly lost her bid to become the first African-American governor of a southern USA state. There are few US troops on the ground actually fighting or providing targeting information.

Our troops have fought with unmatched valour - and thanks to their bravery, we are now able to pursue a political solution to this long and bloody conflict, he said.

President Trump's decision to withdraw troops from Syria will not be a lucrative opportunity for ISIS to regain a hold on oil in that region, according to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Votel confirmed he was among those left in the dark, telling the Senate panel: "I was not aware of the specific announcement".

U.S.is seeking to broker an agreement that prevents Turkey from following through on its threats to launch a full-scale military offensive against Kurdish forces in northeastern Syria. Gen. James Hecker, vice director of operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff said the withdrawal means "it is going to be hard to keep up the pressure" on IS.

The inspector general's assessment is a quarterly report on the fight against ISIS.

Hopes high for concrete results from 2nd Kim-Trump summit
Trump then offered his theory that the election of Hillary Clinton would've resulted in war between the nuclear powers. He told CNN it was "strange to me" that Trump would meet Kim without North Korea having made progress.

When Trump announced his decision to pullout on December 19, it sent shock waves through Washington and the rest of the world. And Votel replied, "We were not".

"ISIS and al Qaeda have yet to be defeated". But figures from the USA military and a United Nations agency have ranged between 20,000 and 32,000 - though officials have acknowledged lacking confidence in their estimates. "To that end, we ask that our coalition partners seriously and rapidly consider requests that will enable our efforts to continue". The report does not address any attrition in ISIS's ranks.

That is hardly a way to secure Democratic support for a more humble USA foreign policy.

"We have won against ISIS", he said, using another acronym for the group.

The IG report's warnings about ISIS's remaining strength mirror a worldwide threat assessment presented on January 29 to the Senate Intelligence Committee by Coats and other senior us intelligence chiefs.

The Kurdish YPG militia makes up more than two thirds of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which the USA have used as the main proxy against IS in northeastern Syria.
