About 1,900 cubic metres of water a second gushed into the Ross River and ultimately into low-lying Townsville suburbs, where residents had to be evacuated.

Overnight, emergency crews ferried dozens of people to higher ground and saved a man stranded on the roof of a vehicle in suburbs north of Townsville as floodwaters rose again.

Earlier, authorities said they were forced into opening the floodgates to the nearby Ross River Dam, which was at nearly 250% capacity.
