US President Donald Trump is accusing the Democrats of opposing funding for a border wall only to deny him and the Republican party a policy victory.

Trump is demanding that the bill funding the Department of Homeland Security include $5 billion for the border wall. Just 35 percent of the adults polled support including border wall funding the bill to fund the rest of government.

"Have the Democrats finally realized that we desperately need Border Security and a Wall on the Southern Border".

"Business owners who have staff are making the decision: Do we pay people or not, even though we won't get paid by the government?".

Lawmakers are away from Washington for the holidays and have been told they will get 24 hours' notice before having to return for a vote.

According to the Associated Press, around 420,000 people are working without pay, while another 380,000 have been put on furlough.
