According to Guatemala's foreign ministry, the father and son entered the U.S.at El Paso, Texas, on December 18, then were taken to the Border Patrol's Alamogordo station Sunday. Officials said more information would be released shortly.

CBP said on Tuesday that the Guatemalan boy's death is being reviewed by the agency's Office of Professional Responsibility, and that the Inspector General has been notified of the death.

Ruben Garcia, director of El Paso's Annunciation House, said Tuesday that he had no reason to believe his shelter had served the family, but was waiting for further details about what happened.

Jakelin's family has disputed CBP reports that the child went several days without food and water before she died, saying she was healthy when she arrived in the United States. She died in the hospital on December 8.

Her death fueled criticism of President Donald Trump's immigration policies from Democrats and migrant advocates.

The child, who has not yet been named, is the second migrant child to have died in USA detention this month.
