Trump Foundation to shut down amid lawsuit

20 December 2018

Attorney General Barbara Underwood sued the Trump Foundation in June, seeking millions in restitution and penalties, including prohibiting President Trump and his three oldest children from serving on any other charity boards in the state.

The Washington Post and others have found that Trump donated little of his personal money to the charity after 2006, and the attorney general's lawsuit accuses the foundation of self-dealing.

In addition to shuttering the charity, her office has pursued a lawsuit that could bar the president and his three oldest children from the boards of other NY charities, as well as force the payment of millions in restitution and penalties. The Trump family's charity has been the target of a suit by the state of NY since this last summer, accusing the nonprofit of "persistently illegal conduct".

The biographer of Trump Nation explains what the dissolution of the Trump Foundation reveals about how "remarkably craven the president has been" in the facets of his life.

Remember the 2014 picture of children in cages - the Obama years. "Many of them don't want to come back", Schumer noted. Some Senate Democratic votes are needed to pass spending bills, even though Republicans hold a majority in the chamber.

Among those assets are two large portraits of Trump and a Denver Broncos helmet autographed by Tim Tebow that Trump spent $12,000 of Trump Foundation money on at a 2012 auction.

Citing alleged campaign contributions and legal settlements, Underwood has accused the Trumps of illegally using money accumulated from charitable donations to the foundation to promote Trump's political and financial goals. Trump's team blamed accounting mistakes.

The lawsuit painted a picture of habitual misuse of foundation funds for years, signed off on by Trump, who was president of the thinly staffed charity. The other portrait, purchased with $10,000 in foundation money in 2014, is now worth $500, the filing states. The most recent tax return filed by the foundation listed its net assets at slightly more than $1.7 million. And then there's the biggest: $264,631 to fix a fountain outside the Trump-owned Plaza Hotel.

Cuomo said the tweetstorm was "Trump being Trump". Lewandowski wrote in an email cited in Underwood's lawsuit. "There is one set of rules for everyone".

And I've always taught myself to look for the beauty of it, to look for beauty in the faces of the children and to be grateful. German-born Pia was scouted by a modelling agency aged just 11, and her career in front of the camera took off.

"Shady Eric was head of New Yorkers for (Hillary) Clinton, and refused to even look at the corrupt Clinton Foundation", he said, repeating an inaccurate claim that the then-attorney general led her campaign work in NY in 2016.

Federal law prohibits charities from participating in political campaigns.

Indeed, the Trump Foundation had no paid employees. But what became of it after that is unknown. Trump's attorney did not respond to a query from The Washington Post about why.
