Trump’s pick for United Nations ambassador went to Pine Manor College

It's more a matter of the personal clout of the person holding the position, vis-à-vis the nominal figures directing US foreign policy like the secretary of State and the president's national security adviser - the two people Jonathan Swan cites as insisting on Nauert's non-Cabinet rank.

Nauert, who Trump praised as being "very talented" and "very smart", would replace Ambassador Nikki Haley who has been a vocal advocate for United States foreign policy and Israel at the UN.

He noted that Nauert has worked at the State Department for almost two years, and she has been involved in key meetings and discussions, including working very closely with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The 46-year-old former SC governor - one of the few women in the Trump cabinet - gave no reason for leaving, but dismissed speculation she was planning to run for president in 2020.

Nauert's appointment would reinforce the link between Fox News and Trump, who has been accused of turning to the conservative-leaning channel, rather than experts, for policy advice.

Prior to her career in journalism, Nauert, who graduated from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism and Mount Vernon College in Washington, served as a health insurance consultant in DC.

The International Space Station now has six crewmembers; three arrived Monday (Dec. 3), and three have been there since June. Kononenko arrived at the station Monday along with Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques and NASA astronaut Anne McClain.

Overnight she took charge of overseeing communication from U.S. diplomatic missions around the world as well as countering propaganda from the Islamic State movement and other foreign adversaries.

Her appointment to the United Nations role would have to be approved by the US Senate.

Pompeo said on Twitter that he had "great confidence" in Nauert and called for her quick confirmation.

Democratic senators likely will resist her nomination, but lack the votes to block it. Nauert won't be going to NY to shape America's foreign policy.

Trump's announcement comes just a day after the USA lost a high-profile vote in the U.N. General Assembly for a resolution condemning the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

There have been other missteps, including the time when she cited D-Day - the Allied invasion of Normandy against the Nazis - as an example of America's strong relationship with Germany.

In return, the White House said Xi will buy a "very substantial amount" of USA agricultural, energy and industrial products. The United States and China are locked in a dispute over their trade imbalance and Beijing's tech policies.

The president both denies watching hours of Fox and other networks each day and says publicly that he "watches all the shows".

Without elaborating on the topics, she added, "For the most part he's been very willing to listen and very willing to come around".

ABC News reported in November that Nauert had been offered the United Nations job, but it was not clear at the time whether she had accepted. "So on that level, Nauert's pick is notable", he told Al Jazeera.

Trump has been critical of the United Nations, complaining about its cost to Washington and criticizing it for focusing on bureaucracy and process rather than results.

Unlike Haley, however, Nauert is not expected to have cabinet status, keeping power over foreign policy firmly with Pompeo and especially John Bolton, the hawkish White House national security advisor.

"I did not know him until recently when I went through the process of looking at people", Mr. Trump said.
