Martin Solveig asks Ada Hegerberg to twerk and later apologises

06 December 2018

British tennis star Andy Murray has led the backlash against a French DJ who asked a female footballer to twerk after she became the first woman to win the Ballon D'Or yesterday.

The incident sparked outrage on social media, with people slamming Solveig for asking the soccer star to perform a sexually provocative dance minutes after she won a prestigious award for her sporting exploits.

"It was a joke".

Solveig took to his own Twitter to share an apology for the moment, which he chalks up to a misunderstanding of the term "twerk".

What made Michelle Obama drop the S-word
Former MSNBC host Toure, who was at the speech, called it a "cute moment" and mocked those who criticized the first lady over it. Then, in what may be an unprecedented slip-up, Obama said the line that threw the audience and internet into a frenzy.

"I'm a little amazed and astonished with what I'm reading on the internet, of course I didn't want to offend anyone", he said. I didn't find it sexist", adding that "These are the men who will help the football female.

And Hegerberg's achievements are enormous. The three-time women's Champions League victor abruptly said "no", before walking away. However, she also expressed frustration about living "in such a man's world" and said the award will not make her reconsider her refusal to play for Norway because of her unhappiness over perceived inequality.

Hegerberg scored in this year's Champions League final against Wolfsburg and was one of eight Lyon players named among the nominees.

That Solveig did so with Hegerberg immediately struck many as icky.

"Another example of the ridiculous sexism that still exists in sport", he wrote on Instagram. And for all those who think that people over-react and that it was just a joke... it was not. "It wasn't. I've been involved in sport my whole life and the level of sexism is unreal".

"In her speech, Ada Hegerberg implored young girls all over the world to believe in themselves and we hope that this moment will not overshadow her incredible achievement of becoming the first recipient of the women's Ballon d'Or".

But when the meaning of twerk was then explained to her, she reacted with dismay, with an expletive.

In September, NRK claimed her former national teammates were demanding an apology from Hegerberg for comments made after Euro 2017.

She continued: "Yeah I had a lot of questions about this subject". "She just won the first ever Ballon D'Or for women". Soccer, like many sports, has a problem with sexism. She is already putting that leverage to use.

Speaking about the publicity last night's incident received, she added: "When you're on that stage, you're spreading your views out for everybody to see".

Despite worldwide calls for their release, the Ukrainians were sentenced to two months' detention and are now held in Moscow . Ukraine's Western allies have condemned Russia's actions, though there's no sign yet of additional sanctions.

"Women's football is taking huge strides and questions and comments like this take away from those strides we have taken". I didn't think about it at that moment. Sometimes you have to take tough decisions to stay true to yourself.
