Ukraine bars entry to Russian males, upping ante in conflict

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko urged North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries to send naval ships to the Sea of Azov.

The move came amid fears of a Russian invasion after Russian forces seized three Ukrainian vessels and 24 sailors in the Black Sea last Sunday. "We discussed this subject with both sides". Another 17 vessels were unable to leave the Ukrainian ports of Mariupol and Berdyansk on the Sea of Azov, it said.

Ukrainian officials on Friday upped the ante in the growing confrontation with Russia, announcing a travel ban for most Russian males and searching the home of an influential cleric of the Russian Orthodox Church.

The goal, they worry, is to dominate the Ukrainian coast between Russian Federation proper and the Crimean peninsula that Moscow annexed in 2014.

Russia, meanwhile, insisted the Ukrainian vessels were in its territorial waters and refused to communicate with the Russian coast guard, or accept a Russian pilot to guide them through the narrow strait. Under this treaty, Russian Federation and Ukraine would both have to grant permission for NATO warships to sail through the Kerch Strait. But Erdogan has always sought to emphasise the importance of Turkey's traditionally strong relations with Ukraine, even as Kiev and Moscow remain at loggerheads.

President Poroshenko said the global community must not accept Russia's aggressive policy, in an interview with German newspaper Bild.

The Kremlin on Wednesday denied Ukrainian complaints that 35 of its merchant ships have been denied passage through the Kerch Strait, leaving half of them stuck in the Sea of Azov and the other half parked in the Black Sea.

For a long time, the slogan "we can repeat" - a reference to the Soviet Union's WWII victory - was popular in Russian Federation.

"First it was Crimea, then eastern Ukraine, now he wants the Sea of Azov", Poroshenko said.

On Wednesday the European Union strongly condemned Russia's actions but failed to agree on new sanctions against Russian Federation.

In light of the escalation, U.S. President Donald Trump called off a planned meeting with Vladimir Putin, with whom he had been scheduled to hold talks on Saturday on the sidelines of the G-20 summit. The EU has propped up Ukraine's war-scarred economy since the Crimea annexation while prodding the pro-Western authorities to pass reforms and tackle corruption.

But Ukraine and foreign observers said it marked the culmination of a yearslong effort by Moscow to force its authority on the Sea of Azov, the waters of which are shared between the two countries, according to a 2003 agreement. In the meantime, a Crimean court ordered that 12 - half of the captured Ukrainian sailors - be detained for two months.

He added that there needs to be increased pressure on Moscow, including stopping the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which is being built under the Baltic Sea and would bypass Ukraine to deliver gas directly to Germany.
