Giuliani calls Cohen 'proven liar' after plea

30 November 2018

Cohen made a surprise appearance Thursday in a NY courtroom at around 9 a.m. The negotiations never led to a finalized deal.

Trump responded to today's news by calling a Cohen "weak person" who is lying to get a reduced sentence.

What did President Trump say?

The timeline and Cohen's previous denials of contacts with Russian officials are particularly relevant because they were used in a House Intelligence Committee report that concluded there was no collusion between anybody in Trump's election campaign and the Russian government.

"He has himself a big prison sentence and he is trying to get a much lesser prison sentence by making up a story", he added.

Mueller earlier this week said Manafort could face additional charges related to lies they say he told investigators in the almost three months since he cut a plea deal.

"That was a project that we didn't do, I didn't do".

They targeted two luxury hotels, a Jewish center, a tourist restaurant and a crowded train station. Six hostages - including a rabbi and his pregnant wife - were killed at the Nariman Chabad House.

Cohen had originally told Congress he stopped pursuing a business deal for Mr. Trump in Russian Federation in January 2016, before the first voting in the GOP primaries.

Cohen said he lied to be consistent with Trump's "political message".

He has previously identified "individual 1" as Mr Trump.

I mused that if Robert Mueller found Cohen credible enough to include him in any case he might make, it would be Mr Trump's worst nightmare come true.

Cohen gave a statement to congressional committees past year saying the president's company pursued a project in Moscow but that the plan was abandoned "for a variety of business reasons".

Cohen initially said the Moscow project proposal was terminated in January 2016 - before the Republican primaries began.

More so than a traditional lawyer, Cohen operated for over a decade as Trump's fixer.

Nintendo Switch Cyber Monday: Buy a console, get $35 eShop cash free
Total U.S. hardware sales for Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday increased 45 percent over the same period in 2017, Nintendo says. Likewise, last week was the Switch's best-selling week in the USA ever; Thanksgiving Day was apparently the high point.

The Washington Post reported past year that Cohen had emailed Dmitry Peskov, Putin's spokesman, seeking his help in advancing a stalled Trump Tower development project in Moscow at the same time Trump was running for president.

Asked Thursday about the plea deal, Trump dismissively said that Cohen "was convicted of various things unrelated to us".

He derided Cohen for co-operating with prosecutors and turning state's evidence, which is a staple of the criminal justice system.

What else has Cohen admitted?

Mr Cohen once famously vowed he would take a bullet for Mr Trump, but speculation mounted over the pugnacious attorney's loyalties after his home and office were raided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in April this year.

Cohen pleaded guilty in August to eight federal charges, including tax evasion, bank fraud and campaign finance violations.

Undisclosed payments to bury embarrassing stories about a political candidate can be treated as a violation of U.S. campaign finance laws. Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team determined that, in fact, discussions of the deal extended well beyond that - as late as June 2016, the filing says. The hacker who stole Democratic e-mails in 2016 and passed them along to WikiLeaks went by Guccifer 2.0, and Mueller's team believes Guccifer 2.0 to be a Russian agent. The plea increased the pressure on Trump during the ongoing special counsel investigation into Russia's role in the election.

However, it was her remarks earlier in the campaign that became the focus of this final Senate election vote. Hyde-Smith will serve in the seat until 2020, the end of the six-year term Cochran won in 2014.

On Thursday, Mr Trump told reporters: "It is sad what happened to Paul".
