Mexico Result 'Bitter Sweet' for Red Bull after Ricciardo Retirement - Horner

01 November 2018

Following his second win of the season at the Mexican Grand Prix, Max Verstappen has put his impressive form in the second half of the season down to following some advice from his father - Jos - used to give him during his karting days as a youngster. There were hearts in mouths in the Mercedes garage, as Hamilton came within inches of touching Raikkonen as they slammed on the anchors for Turn 1, before the Brit held his nerve on the outside of the left-handed Turn 2, to make his way past the Ferrari at the ensuing right-hander.

Watching teammate Max Verstappen cruise away to victory in Mexico, pole sitter Ricciardo looked to have settled for second before his auto went up in smoke just 10 laps from the finish.

With Hamilton breathing down his neck, Vettel slid into the gravel at Sachs Kurve, as Hamilton took one of the very best race wins of his career.

"You reflect on the work that goes on from a year ago to now".

Vettel broke off from a television interview to congratulate Hamilton on his fifth title and fourth in the last five years. It's strong run in a season that began with mistakes that cost him potential victories and drew a reprimand for risky driving moves. Every other time was Monaco, it starts with an M but this time it's Mexico!

And that meant the Mercedes man had the opportunity to wrap up the World Drivers' Championship at the United States Grand Prix a week ago.

But, just as in Mexico City a year ago, Hamilton, who needed to finish only seventh to be sure of the title, did enough to take the spoils, clinching his fourth championship in five quite remarkable seasons.

Persistent tyre problems hindered Hamilton's race and chances of wrapping up the title with a win, but he remained safely within the required top seven.

Ricciardo, who will leave to join Renault at the end of the season, has now retired from eight races in 2018. Engine failure has killed his vehicle in six of the last 11 races with two left on the season in Brazil and Abu Dhabi. But sadly that couldn't transpire on Race day.

Ricciardo qualified on pole for Sunday's race in Mexico, but the Aussie could only manage 61 laps before yet another reliability issue forced him to retire for the eighth time this season.

With just ten laps remaining, the Australian was looking good for a podium, and though Vettel would have surely picked him off, he was nearly certain to finish ahead of Kimi Raikkonen. "Being behind the Red Bulls is not a bad thing". But in Mexico, that sadness was replaced by anger, as Ricciardo suffered his seventh mechanically-related DNF of the season - and admitted that he was more than ready to hand over his vehicle to Pierre Gasly for 2019...

Ricciardo was extremely frustrated after the race, telling the media his vehicle was "cursed". The two had a costly collision in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix that knocked both cars out of the race. "Everything feels hopeless. You know, honestly, now where I am, I don't see the point of coming on Sunday".
