Another Suspicious Package to CNN, This Time in Atlanta

30 October 2018

CNN's NY bureau was targeted last week with two apparent mailed explosives, which authorities believe were part of a string of 14 suspicious packages sent to public figures and well-known Democrats across the country.

It's unclear whether Sayoc is suspected to be responsible for the most recent suspicious package sent to CNN.

Yet another suspicious package addressed to President Donald Trump's perceived political enemies has been intercepted by federal authorities.

According to CNN president Jeff Zucker, there is no current threat to the network's employees, and furthermore that all mail is being delivered and screened at a secure site beforehand.

"Our screening process is working, and we will keep you updated as we learn more", the company added.

A suspicious package was found at a post office in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Time Warner Center, where CNN's NY operation is located, was evacuated on Wednesday after a suspicious package turned up there.

A 56-year-old suspect named Cesar Sayoc has been arrested in relation to last week's parcel bombs.

According to CBS News, the package that was intercepted in Atlanta was similar to 14 others that were sent to high-profile newsmakers and CNN's NY bureau since October 23. A judge set another hearing for Friday on whether to grant bail to Sayoc and to discuss when he will be sent from Miami to NY, where five federal charges were filed. The FBI confirmed what they recovered is "similar in appearance to" ones addressed to John Brennan and James Clapper, both sent in care of CNN. All mail is being screened off site.

Authorities said the packages discovered last week contained "a live explosive device".

It is not yet known whether the new package is connected to the man known as the MAGAbomber.

Sayoc's other targets included former president Barack Obama, former attorney general Eric Holder, Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, liberal billionaire George Soros and actor Robert De Niro, authorities said. His social media shows he was an ardent defender of the president and virulent critic of Trump's opponents. It was addressed to Time Warner Center. Sayoc was arrested on Friday and was formally charged on Monday.
