Svitolina and Pliskova win opening matches at WTA Finals

24 October 2018

Elina Svitolina is determined to go from strength to strength in the WTA Finals and proving she deserves to be among the elite.

She was placed in the same group as Angelique Kerber and Sloane Stephens during the draw for the season-ending event at a glitzy gala ceremony on Friday.

Wozniacki, who started her White Group campaign with a 6-2 6-4 loss to Karolina Pliskova on Sunday, spent most of the match against Kvitova pinned on the baseline but her consistency and patience proved vital as she pulled away in the final set.

"I think everyone in my group is a really good player so I'm just really excited to get to play them".

David Luiz: 'Chelsea's spirit against Manchester United was amazing'
Ross Barkley's injury-time goal salvaged a point for Chelsea , protecting their unbeaten record under Maurizio Sarri . The 2-2 in last minutes is ok, ok for the confidence of my players, but I have to look at something else.

Osaka admitted she was mentally exhausted in that final following her draining triumph in NY and the fan favourite, who turned 21 just days ago, could confirm her arrival as a major force on the women's tour. Her forehands were being a huge liability and as a result, Pliskova pounced all over those vulnerable shots and broke to start the second set. She saved all 10 break points she had faced throughout the encounter while Wozniacki only had no one to blame for missing all these opportunities as Pliskova was simply playing on another level.

Stephens, 25, who won the U.S. Open in 2017, is looking forward to this second outing against Osaka.

"Winning this match definitely gives me lots of confidence".

"Like before it was only Japan I felt like people knew me". But now the airports and stuff.

Australian Government Loses Majority With Election Defeat
Former Liberal leader John Hewson says the defeated party needs to rethink and completely reset. I think she'll have an impact there, in that chamber where personalities really do matter.

"So, yeah, I think this, until the next match I can really enjoy this win".

"For me, I can't change who I am".

"I'm really excited to be back here in Singapore", Kerber said. Obviously very overwhelming, winning a Grand Slam after not having played for 11 months.

Big-serving Karolina Pliskova used her most potent weapon to damaging effect as she overwhelmed defending champion Caroline Wozniacki 6-2 6-4 in their opening round robin match of the WTA Finals at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Sunday. "I can say I see some players that have a bigger chance, actually Wozniacki because she won previous year and I think the court suits her. I will try to show here their best game", said Elina Svitolina. The Dutch (winner of three titles this season, last one at the end of September in South Korea) is in a great state of form: if she had to cope with the shock of emotion, she could be the outsider of the tournament.

Israel’s Supreme Court rules BDS supporter can stay
She landed in Israel at the beginning of the month for a master's program in human rights at an Israeli university. Alqasem was released from the detention facility around 9 pm, and she was greeted by lawyer Yotam Ben-Hillel.

"And, thankfully, I get some rest before Thursday [when she plays Elina Svitolina]". WTA Finals 2018, percentages: Red round robin: Osaka 30% Bertens 25% Stephens 25% Kerber 20%.
