Senate moves to final vote on controversial Trump's Supreme Court pick Kavanaugh

08 October 2018

On Friday, Sen. Jeff Flake, the Republican who stalled Kavanaugh's nomination process by wielding his leverage to call for the Federal Bureau of Investigation review, announced he would vote for Kavanaugh unless something major changes before Saturday.

The nominee had been dogged by accusations of sexual misconduct by California college professor Christine Blasey Ford and his former fellow Yalie Deborah Ramirez. But health care, not the Supreme Court, is by far the most important issue for West Virginia voters, according to polling data released in late September. Murkowski then indicated she will not vote for Kavanaugh in the final vote, which could take place Saturday.

"I think we all have husbands and fathers and a lot of us have sons, and I think it is a troubling time for them", Murphy said.

Kay Coles James, president of the conservative Heritage Foundation, called the vote "a victory for liberty in America" and called Kavanaugh "a good man and good jurist". "FBI investigation was done, is completed and Senate voted".

"I believe something happened to Dr. Ford". "I will move on that and I think that all the victims, they need - we need to help all the victims no matter what kind of abuse they had, but I am against any kind of abuse or violence", the first lady said.

When Mr Trump nominated Mr Kavanaugh in July, Democrats leapt to oppose him, saying that past statements and opinions showed he'd be a threat to the Roe v Wade case that assured the right to abortion.

In the procedural ballot, senators voted 51-49 to limit debate, defeating Democratic efforts to scuttle the nomination with endless delays. He has a decent sized lead in the polls against the Republican, Patrick Morrisey.

"I would agree that the materials that I read did not provide direct corroboration, but there were a dozen, two dozen other witnesses who were not interviewed", Coons said. Murkowski said she'd use an obscure procedure that lets one senator offset the absence of another without affecting the outcome.

Murkowski lost a primary battle in 2010 but was re-elected as a write-in candidate.

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) told reporters on Capitol Hill Friday that he will be voting "yes" to confirm President Trump's Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Attorneys for Christine Blasey Ford say their client is not interested in murmurings that Democrats may seek to impeach Judge Brett Kavanaugh if they reclaim the House of Representatives in the November midterm elections.

Key Republican swing votes included senators Jeff Flake, of Arizona, who had been the sole Republican member of the Senate Judiciary Committee to press for a FBI investigation into the allegations against Kavanaugh; Susan Collins, of ME; and Lisa Murkowski, of Alaska.

Manchin announced he would vote to confirm Kavanaugh, in spite of "reservations" about the allegations and the nominee's temperament.

"My heart goes out to anyone who has experienced any type of sexual assault in their life", Manchin said. Banks said Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley's statements about the offer during the hearing confused Ford.
