For first time in 55 years, Woman wins Nobel Prize in Physics

Strickland, 59, shared the prize with an American scientist and another from France for their work in laser physics.

Lauded for discoveries and accomplishments in the field of laser physics, Strickland shares this year's prize with two other scientists, Gerard Mourou of France and Arthur Ashkin from the United States.

Ashkin will take one half of the prize while Mourou and Strickland will share the other half.

Cern scientist suspended after commentsReacting to her win, Dr Strickland, who is based at the University of Waterloo in Canada, said, "First of all you have to think it's insane, so that was my first thought".

The inventions by the three laser scientists date back to the mid-1980s and over the years they have revolutionised laser physics. "This new tool allowed Ashkin to realize an old dream of science fiction - using the radiation pressure of light to move physical objects", the academy says in its press release.

"Advanced precision instruments are opening up unexplored areas of research and a multitude of industrial and medical applications", it said in a statement.

For the first time since 1949, the Swedish Academy has postponed the announcement of the 2018 Nobel Literature Prize until next year, amid a #MeToo scandal and bitter internal dispute that has prevented it from functioning properly. Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, Physics, and Chemistry are conferred upon people who have excelled in the field of science.

"I knew he was right", she said. They can examine and manipulate viruses, bacteria and other living cells without damaging them. "There are more and more women scientists, so I think it (male dominance) will change, and more female scientists are leading research groups, playing a bigger role, these are also important", Lindroth added.

"Obviously we need to celebrate women physicists because we're out there".

Ashkin will receive half of the monetary prize, worth about $1 million.

Everyone is trying to do more for the team. "He's there to put a team out and put a team out that he thinks can win the game. I don't believe any player goes onto the pitch and doesn't try". "Every player is different, no player is the same.

Strickland was shocked to hear she was one of three women to win the physics prize (the first being Marie Curie in 1903, the last being Maria Goeppert Mayer in 1963).

Born in Guelph, Ontario, Strickland earned a Bachelor of Engineering Physics from McMaster University and later a PhD Physics from the University of Rochester in NY.

Strickland, who was announced as a victor on Tuesday, is a Canadian physicist who was awarded in a group of three scientists for their "method generating high-intensity, ultra-short optical pulses". Mourou was a physics professor heading research into ultra-fast lasers, and in 1985, Mourou was lead author of a scientific paper detailing chirped pulse amplification (CPA) - a technique producing ultra-short and intense laser pulses. In the case of the Nobel prize which is given for peace, the Norwegian Parliament decides it.

The Canadian said she was honored to be one of the small number of female winners of the physics Nobel so far.

Tesla misses weekly Model 3 production target, warns of trade war impact
Tesla has struggled to quickly boost production of the Model 3, a auto that is seen as critical to the upstart's growth plans. Tesla announced today that it produced 55,239 Model 3 cars this quarter, meeting its self-assigned benchmark.
