National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham warned that Florence was forecast to linger over the Carolinas once it reaches shore.

Packing winds of up to 220 km/h (140 mph) late Monday, Florence was expected to further strengthen and become "an extremely risky major hurricane" by the time in makes landfall in the Carolinas on Thursday, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in a 21:00 UTC update.

The governors of North and South Carolina, Maryland and Virginia declared states of emergency ahead of the approaching storm.

Hurricane Florence moved closer to the U.S. East Coast after becoming a major hurricane Monday again.

Despite uncertainty of the impact Hurricane Florence might have on Howard County, officials are preparing for the worst.

This is despite the optimism they showed earlier in the year when they became the first Wall Street firm to clear Bitcoin futures. Digital currencies often move in tandem, pulled by the fortunes of bitcoin - which far exceeds its peers in terms of market size.

The nearly 500-mile wide storm swirling towards the United States east coast "could be the most unsafe storm in the history of the Carolinas", the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema) administrator, Brock Long, warned on Tuesday afternoon.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster ordered as many as one million residents of the state's entire eastern coastline to leave their homes starting at noon on Tuesday. Other counties are evacuating low lying and flood prone areas. Troops have received ready-to-deploy orders for Virginia, South Carolina, and North Carolina.

HOLDEN BEACH, N.C.: The powerful Hurricane Florence threatened to bring "days and days" of rain and potentially deadly flooding to the US southeast coast, North Carolina's governor warned on Tuesday, as some 1 million people were ordered to evacuate their homes. The National Hurricane Center says such massive rainfall could produce "catastrophic flash flooding and significant river flooding".

While there remains some uncertainty around Hurricane Florence's exact path, one thing does seem certain: it will dump potentially historic rainfall amounts.

Not only will hurricane force winds be a major concern along the coastal locations, but flooding rains will also be a high risk.

"If it decides to come here, we're gone", he said.
