"I made a bad mistake for which I paid dearly and I am terribly ashamed", Papadopoulos said at his sentencing hearing.

Papadopoulos, the first campaign aide sentenced in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing investigation, had said he was "deeply embarrassed" and acknowledged that his actions could have hindered the FBI agents' work.

"I made a terrible mistake but I am a good..."

The special counsel's office prosecutors want a more substantial sentence and have asked the judge for up to six months of prison time, which would fall within the court's guidelines for his crime.

The Democratic National Committee, which is suing Russian Federation, the Trump campaign and WikiLeaks over the alleged election interference in the 2016, filed a court document on Friday, saying Mr Mifsud "was missing and may be deceased", without any further explanation, according to Bloomberg News.

Nadal retires to send Del Potro into U.S. Open final

After the Clinton emails were leaked, the Australians told U.S. intelligence counterparts what Downer had heard, spurring the Federal Bureau of Investigation to begin investigating possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow.

His lawyers say Papadopoulous acted out of a "misguided sense of loyalty to his master" and to preserve his career options in the new administration. "He was very fair", Kiki Papadopoulos said.

"My entire life has been turned upside down, I hope to have a second chance to redeem myself", he said. Papadopoulos had told investigators that the conversation happened before he became a Trump campaign adviser, when in fact he had worked for the campaign for more than a month at the time.

Trump and his allies have repeatedly downplayed Papadopoulos' role on the campaign, with one of them describing him as a mere "coffee boy".

Prosecutors said Papadopoulos's lack of cooperation with investigators meant they were unable to effectively question or detain Mr Mifsud. "Judge Randy Moss emphasized that there's "no reason to think the Federal Bureau of Investigation bamboozled" Papadopoulos, and he said his lies were not meant to boost Russian Federation but to serve his own self-interest of getting a job in the Trump White House". His reaction was that Mifsud "was simply repeating gossip and rumors", Papadopoulos said.

Tropical Storm Florence turns into a hurricane
Isaac became the fifth hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic Season and the third storm being actively tracked in a busy weather weekend. Beaufort Mayor Billy Keyslerling told residents via a Saturday newsletter that an evacuation order could come as soon as Monday.

In subsequent campaign communications, Papadopoulos was encouraged to pursue a Putin-Trump meeting.

He did not elaborate on the $28 million price tag he cited, though it appeared to be about the cost of Mueller's investigation.

Moss said that while Papadopoulos lied for selfish reasons and did real harm to the government's efforts to carry out its investigation of Russian meddling, he was moved by what he called the defendant's "genuine remorse about what he did".

Sessions has claimed he opposed the idea, but Papadopoulos continued to discuss the idea with top campaign officials over the following months. "No Collusion. A great day for America!"

Breen also rejected the idea that Papadopoulos was the victim of a witch hunt or prosecutorial misconduct.
