10 September 2018

A 25-year-old Indian man was among three people killed when a gunman opened fire in a bank building in the USA city of Cincinnati before police shot the attacker dead on Thursday.

The city's police chief, Eliot Isaac, said the suspect was Omar Enrique Santa Perez, 29, of North Bend, Ohio, a Cincinnati suburb. One victim was dead at the scene and four other shooting victims were transported to a hospital, where two of those people died, Isaac said. The gunman was later shot dead by the police.

An officer's body-camera video shows him shooting into the glass about six times.

An aunt of the man who killed three and injured two during a shooting Thursday broke down crying when she learned her nephew was responsible for the attack.

The two wounded people were in critical and fair condition, University of Cincinnati Medical Center said. "This is an American problem, that we as Americans must solve by putting ideology last and human life first", said Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley.

The two other victims were identified as 48-year-old Luis Felipe Calderon and 64-year-old Richard Newcomer.

"These are things we see happening across the country and we all have to be vigilant and prepared to deal with these situations", Isaac said.

Earlier, police said Perez had accessed the high-rise building through a loading dock.

"We couldn't be more grief-stricken", he said.

Much is still unclear about the gunman.

In all, the shooting spree spanned about four minutes, though authorities said on Friday that the shooter's gun jammed and prevented him from continuing to fire.

He had fired 35 rounds inside the lobby as receptionists and other workers starting their day dove for cover, Isaac said.

His aunt, Yudy Martinez Perez, slumped against a kitchen wall and muttered denials after she heard the news, The Cincinnati Enquirer reported. "And I'm thinking about how I can make a difference in the future", Austin said in the statement.

One witness, Leonard Cain, told the Cincinnati Enquirer that a woman wearing headphones and holding a cellphone entered the bank while the shooting was in progress. He entered the center's lobby through that shop, police said.

A woman who works on one of the lower floors of the building said her co-worker was on an elevator when the doors opened and she almost stepped on a man's body.

"All that was going through my mind was they're coming, they're coming for us".

Fifth Third Bank issued a statement Thursday afternoon, offering thoughts and prayers for those caught up in the "terrible event".

The victims apparently were shot at random by the gunman, who had no accomplices, Issac said.
