Kelly, who on Monday celebrated his first anniversary as chief of staff, told West Wing staff Monday that he will be staying in his post at Trump's request through the remainder of the president's first term.
The commitment would provide stability at the top for a White House staff that has seen high turnover, unless either Trump or Kelly changes his mind.
The officials who were not authorized to speak publicly about private conversations.

Kelly told staffers that he agreed to the president's ask, despite reportedly telling colleagues in recent months that he did not intend to stay in his role past his one-year mark.
Last month, Mr. Trump told reporters he didn't know how long Kelly would stay on board. "This is another pathetic attempt to smear people close to President Trump and distract from the administration's many successes". Rather he would be staying to continue to advise the president and the administration as he has done since his appointment in July of past year. Trump may praise a person one day, only to rant about them on Twitter the next day.

Kelly has told allies that he feels it his duty to serve even if he and the president differ on style and messaging.

Kelly has acknowledged that his tenure could end with a single presidential tweet but, keenly aware of his own public perception, has suggested that he believes he can leave a lasting mark on the post and rehabilitate his reputation, one of the White House officials said.
But Trump has made a decision to stick with Kelly - for now, at least.
"I spend more time with the President than anyone else and we have an incredibly candid and strong relationship", Kelly said in a statement at the time.
