Donald Trump blames United States 'witch-hunt' for poor Putin relations

Trump's meeting with Putin in Helsinki was his first time sharing the global stage with a man he has described as an important us competitor - but whom he has also praised a strong, effective leader.

The Russian foreign ministry "liked" Trump's comments on Twitter ahead of the summit, in which Trump denounced the investigation into Russian meddling in American elections as well as previous United States policy. "We are the two great nuclear powers", he said. Question for President Trump as he meets Putin: "Do you know which team you play for?"

No mention of Russia interference in the presidential election, the 12 Russian military officers indicted in the USA on Friday for election tampering, Russian's annexation of territory in Crimea, etc.

The Helsinki summit is the capstone to a almost week-long trip for Trump during which he has sown doubts about his commitment to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation military alliance, Washington's so-called special relationship with Britain, and USA relations with the European Union that he called "a foe" in trade terms.

Putin, for his part, said he and Trump have maintained regular contact through phone calls and meetings at worldwide events but "the time has come to have a thorough discussion on various global problems and sensitive issues".

"Frankly, we have not been getting along very well for the last number of years", Trump said.

"I've already increased defense spending, modernized our nuclear weapons. We can do more, so if you want to do an arms race you'll lose", Trump said, a source recalled to Axios. After nearly two decades of Putin's rule, one would hope that we would have figured out the difference by now.

President Donald Trump speaks Monday at the beginning of a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki, Finland. Bolton described the meeting as "unstructured" and said: "We're not looking for concrete deliverables here". Rosenstein went to great lengths to urge the media not to politicize the charges based on the accusation that the Russians victimized targets on one side of the political spectrum.

Missing, you'll notice, is any discussion of Russian interference in the 2016 election or the poisoning of a former Russian intelligence officer in Britain earlier this year, an attack blamed on Putin's government.

"Our relationship with Russian Federation has NEVER been worse thanks to man years of US foolishness and stupidity and now, the Rigged Witch Hunt!".

Russian Federation denies interfering in the USA presidential election.

Trump's U.S. opponents tried, in turn, to gain traction for the sarcastic hashtag lampooning his reluctance to criticise the Kremlin: #BAF (Blame America First).

Trump hurts relationships with allies: Germany, one of the United States' strongest allies, says it "can no longer completely rely on the White House", after Trump called the European Union a "foe" on trade, Reuters reported.

Observers have raised concerns about the fact that the leaders met alone during their first meeting, but for a pair of interpreters, meaning there will be no corroborating witnesses to accurately represent what was said during the conversation.

If Trump's instinct is right and he finds common ground with Putin, then the pair's Helsinki Summit may take the heat out of some of the world's most risky conflicts.

Russian Federation reacted positively to a June 12 meeting between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. "The president can put this on the table and say this is a serious matter, we need to talk about it".

Jake Tapper on Monday morning shared a tweet from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russian Federation.

As Trump meets behind closed doors with Putin, the country is holding its breath to see what comes out of the meeting, particularly because the goal of it was never fully clear. Fellow GOP politicians have generally stuck with Trump during a year and a half of turmoil, but he was assailed as seldom before as he returned home Monday night from what he had hoped would by a proud summit with Putin. Russian agents allegedly used Bitcoin to fund the DNC hack
Putin has denied any election meddling, and Trump has denied any collusion with Russian Federation . Rosenstein related that he had briefed President Trump on the coming charges earlier this week.

For Putin, that the summit is even happening despite Russia's semi-pariah status among some Americans and USA allies is a geopolitical win.
