Officer Who Appeared to Ignore Puerto Rican Flag Shirt Episode Resigns

14 July 2018

The Cook County Forest Preserve police officer who was caught on video letting a man verbally abuse a woman, resigned the evening before a hearing investigating the case.

In the video of the June 14 incident, which has since been widely circulated online, Trybus is heard repeatedly questioning the woman's citizenship and told her she shouldn't be wearing her Puerto Rican flag shirt.

Timothy Trybus, 62, of Des Plaines was charged with two felony counts of committing a hate crime in addition to the misdemeanour counts of assault and disorderly conduct he already faced, the Cook County State's Attorney's Office said. He had previously been charged with misdemeanor assault for the incident.

Cook County Forest Preserve officials said Thursday they had planned to interview the officer involved in a now-viral Puerto Rico t-shirt video - but that he resigned before they could do so.

"You should not be wearing that in the United States of America", he tells her. They also said that more officers responded and arrested Trybus when the first officer asked for assistance on the radio.

He allegedly demanded to know if a Latina picnicker was a U.S. citizen in last month's incident. At one point in the video, Irizarry turns the phone on herself to provide a glimpse of the shirt.

Emmys 2018 Nomination Snubs - Who Was Left Off List
One show that stars a pair of local natives and has been nominated in the past was shut out in every major category. The USA Network legal drama, whose eighth season will premiere later this month, has yet to receive any Emmy nods.

'Officer, I feel highly uncomfortable, can you please grab him, please?' she asks the cop again.

"You don't come here harassing people", the officer continues.

"The world is not going to change the United States of America".

And anyone who has eyeballs can see how police do not handle encounters with Black and brown people the same as with whites.

22 years after that incident, we are still seeing the same kind of bigotry, the same kind of misunderstanding about Latinos and who Puerto Ricans are, and the same fear that we are outsiders who don't belong here.

'People have just as much right to be here as you do, ' she can be heard telling him in the clip.

Finally an uninvolved bystander, who had been watching the scene unfold, called for more police.

I showed my official ID as a Member of Congress, to which the officer said, "I don't think so", indicating that she thought my ID was a fake and that I couldn't possibly be a Member of Congress.

Forest Preserve District Police Chief Kelvin Pope said Connor "should've stepped in, and he should've done something". We can not allow those who do not understand America's greatness to terrorize people due to their background.

In an earlier statement, the police said that an investigation had been launched and the officer had been placed on desk duty.

Randall said the Forest Preserve refunded Irizarry permit fee and apologized.

Connor's resignation was "a commonsense decision after his inaction and failure to serve Cook County", Cook County Commissioner Jesus Garcia said, according to The Chicago-Sun Times. This is not the America we all believe in'. I am troubled by the initial response by the officer who was on the scene.
