The 82-year-old, from Pune, India, managed to grow his left hand nails to a collective length of about 29 feet, 10 inches over the course of 66 years. But why did Shridhar grow them so long in the first place?

Shridhar Chillal of India displays his newly cut fingernails in NY.

"When I had my nails I took special care of them because they're a very delicate part of our body, I took care of them for a lifetime", he said. His longest nail was of his thumbnail, which measured 197.8 centimeters.

The teacher said Mr Chillal would never understand what it took to take care of long fingernails and the student set out to prove his teacher wrong, going on to dedicate his life to taking care of his claws.

One show that stars a pair of local natives and has been nominated in the past was shut out in every major category. The USA Network legal drama, whose eighth season will premiere later this month, has yet to receive any Emmy nods.

No word on how Chillal is adapting to the lighter load on his left hand, but life just became easier for him in many ways.

Chillal explained that he started growing the nails at age 14, after being scolded by a teacher for causing her to break her nail. Due to years of growing his nails and their weight, his left hand is permanently handicapped; he can not open his hand from a closed position or flex his fingers.

Now 82, Mr Chillal, from Pune, India, made a decision to cut his nails when a NY museum promised to "maintain them very nicely and for a lifetime".

"I am in pain", he told Guinness World Records.

After 66 years of growing them, the man with the world's longest fingernails now has a free hand to work with. "With every heart beat all five fingers, my wrist, elbow and shoulder are hurting a lot and at the tip of the nail there's a burning sensation always", Chillal told Guinness World Records. His longest nail was on his thumb.

This is the moment that he finally said goodbye to his record-breaking nails.
