Manafort No Longer Wants To Move Jails While He Awaits Trial

13 July 2018

Manafort served Trump's campaign for almost five months, joining in March 2016 and climbing to be campaign chairman before stepping down in August 2016 after reports of his connections to pro-Russian forces in Ukraine.

Paul Manafort arrived at the jail in Alexandria, Virginia - the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center - Thursday morning, according to a spokesperson for the Alexandria Sheriff's Office. Manafort might be aware of this, so no wonder he's not looking particularly cheery about his current situation.

Paul Manafort may be in jail, but he's getting treated better than other inmates, according to special counsel Robert Mueller's team, which is arguing against Manafort's call for his trial date to be pushed back. In the meantime, he said Manafort would be moved from the Northern Neck to the jail in Alexandria, in suburban Washington, "to ensure that the defendant has access to his counsel and can adequately prepare his defense".

Rescued Thai soccer team unable to attend World Cup final
Soccer's governing body, FIFA, has invited the boys to the World Cup final in Moscow on Sunday if they're well enough to attend. Two divers helped each one make his way through dark, very narrow passages, some of which are filled with dirty water.

Manafort asked for the delay on the grounds he has been unable to prepare for his trial properly since being jailed. Manafort was heard on a monitored prison phone call saying he was being treated "like a VIP," the filing adds; calls not with his attorneys are subject to monitoring. He instructed the U.S. Marshals Service to move Manafort to Alexandria, as he initially planned. They said they gained access to another prison call on June 20 in which Manafort told a listener skeptical about delaying the Virginia case and bringing forward a separate trial in Washington, D.C.

In their court filing today, prosecutors sought to pick apart Manafort's arguments that he needs to delay the trial because of his jail conditions.

Though Manafort's lawyers have said he spends almost all of his days in solitary confinement, prosecutors described his living arrangements as a "private, self-contained living unit, which is larger than other inmates" units' with its own bathroom and shower.

Manafort has not been seen since a DC federal judge revoked his bail and sent him to the regional jail in Warsaw, Virginia, about two hours from DC, for alleged witness tampering. Manafort doesn't even have to wear a prison jumpsuit.

Defense lawyers, in response, said the government had selected "snippets" of the conversations to support their version of events. "Specific details about Mr. Manafort's confinement will not be made public due to security and privacy concerns".

Rescuers have freed four boys trapped in Thai cave
Narongsak said experts told him the new rain could shrink the unflooded space where the boys are sheltering to 108 square feet. The entire operation to rescue all 13 could last two to four days, depending on weather and water conditions, said army Maj.
