Brazil cruises past Mexico into World Cup quarter-finals

04 July 2018

Brazil, which last won the World Cup in 2002, will now line up in its quarter-final match against the victor of today's second match between Belgium and Japan.

Brazil got second-half goals from Neymar and Roberto Firmino to hand Mexico a loss in the first game of the knockout round for a seventh consecutive World Cup. In the end, Mexico leaves Russian Federation with consecutive scoreless matches.

Outside Brazil, fans and former players condemned the Paris St Germain player, with Denmark's Peter Schmeichel calling his antics "disgraceful", former England player Alan Shearer tweeting "STOP IT".

'We lost our style due to the referee giving too much stoppage time.

Brazil coach Tite was unsurprisingly supportive of Neymar, dismissing accusations of playacting, while preferring to talk about his improving side, who seem to be finding their rhythm after a third successive 2-0 victory. The team could've had more than one goal in the period but Ochoa pulled off a string of good saves.

He went from an unheralded second-round draft pick out of Texas A&M in 2009 to become one of the best big men in the league. Randle was given a $5.6-million qualifying offer by the Lakers earlier this week, which made him a restricted free agent.

It took him 20 minutes to warm up but from the moment he first exposed Mexico right-back Edson Alvarez with a weaving run inside, the die was cast.

Mexico head coach Juan Carlos Osorio was critical of Neymar in his post-match media conference, and Layun believes it is a shame such a talented player allows less favourable aspects to creep into his game.

"In Neymar's defence he has been fouled more than any other player at this World Cup and he is regularly the target of rough treatment". But Brazilian keeper Alisson, lifted it over the goal for his first save of the game.

World Cup action continues today as England take on Colombia for a place in the quarter-finals against Sweden or Switzerland.

Neymar would be a better player "if he dedicated himself more to playing football", according to Mexico's Miguel Layun.

Tite tempers Brazil's World Cup hopes ahead of Mexico clash
Germany, the defending champions, have stunningly been dumped out of this summer's championship at the group stage . "We're here to make history and it is in our hands".

Neymar's dispute with Layun unfolded as the Mexico substitute tried to recover the ball. This could've been another of them if it hadn't been for Ochoa who, just like four years ago, kept denying nearly every Brazilian on the pitch. "This should be a game of men and not so much clowning around".

During the win over Costa Rica in the group stage, Neymar tried to win a penalty by flopping to the ground in the area.

Neymar, though, still led the celebrations, charging toward the corner flag.

With Germany, Argentina and Spain among the contenders already eliminated, Brazil's hopes of a sixth World Cup title have received an extra lift.

A video review reversed the decision to award a penalty kick and Neymar's frustrations a few minutes later led to a yellow card. That "honour" goes to Lionel Messi, whose exit from the World Cup and subsequent retirement rumours had social media ablaze.
