Ghana Football Association dissolved amid corruption allegations

11 June 2018

The government of Ghana says it has begun action to dissolve the Ghana Football Association after an undercover investigation exposed alleged corruption amongst referees and implicated the federation's president, Kwesi Nyantakyi.

The latest documentary from controversial Ghanaian journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anasexposes this unfortunate truth.

President Akufo-Addo has since reported the conduct of Mr. Nyantakyi to the Criminal Investigations Department and has been subsequently charged with defrauding by false pretense.

He indicated that in the coming days, he would address the media on issues raised in the video. In one clip, Range Marwa, a major global referee from Kenya is seen taking $600 from a man reportedly posing as a Ghanaian official.

Nyantakyi, a member of FIFA's decision-making Council, also apologised to Ghana president Nana Akufo-Addo and the government for what he called his "indiscretion".

A press release from FIFA, yesterday, announced Nyantakyi's ban from all football-related activities at both national and global levels, leaving him with no option than to resign.

According to a statement signed by the country's Information Minister, Mustapha Amid, the government expressed indignation at the contents of Anas' video.

"Having regard to the widespread nature of the apparent rot involving top GFA officials, NSA [National Sports Authority] officials, match commissioners, football administrators and referees, government has made a decision to take immediate steps to have the GFA dissolved", he said.
