Floyd Mayweather tops Forbes' list as highest-paid athlete

07 June 2018

Football icon Cristiano Ronaldo ($108 million) who was the world's highest paid athlete the past two years, has dropped two positions to Number 3.

Speaking to HuffPost UK, Kate Dale, lead of Sport England's This Girl Can campaign, said "it matters" that there are no women on the list as "sport has the power to change more than the sporting world itself". Tennis player Serena Williams was the sole female representative a year ago, coming in at 51st.

For the first time since 2009, not a single female athlete made it into the top 100 - with Serena Williams missing out after giving birth to her daughter Alexis in September - and therefore hardly playing tennis.

Forbes said 40 basketball players were among the top 100 thanks to a "soaring salary cap triggered by the NBA's $24 billion TV contract". Real Madrid forward Ronaldo ($108m/£80.6m) fell to third, behind his rival Lionel Messi ($111m/£82.9m).

Messi's annual salary and bonus exceeded United States dollars 80 million, making him the highest-paid player on the pitch this year. However, Kohli's earnings are less than one-fourth of Mayweather, who earned $285 million in the same period. "If I had of fought on the agreed May 12th bout in Rio De Janeiro, I would have surpassed Ronaldo and Messi to take 2nd place".

Williams ranked 51st on the 2017 list, earning an estimated $27 million between endorsement deals and prize money. He jumps 13 spots to fifth with an income of $90 million, including $19 million from endorsement partners.

However, that was about $5 million less than National Basketball Association player Nicolas Batum, who landed the 100th spot on the list. The top 100 earned Dollars 3.8 billion, a 23 per cent jump over previous year.

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan is the highest earning National Football League player, coming in at ninth with $67.3 million. Those three sports had a combined 72 entries, Forbes added.
