05 June 2018

Clouds of steam rose over Kapoho Bay on Hawaii's Big Island after a stream of lava from the Kilauea volcano made contact with the sea on Monday, June 4.

The agency earlier tweeted that locals had reported seeing lava on the shore of Kapoho Bay on Sunday evening.

The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency says Saturday that vigorous lava eruptions are continuing in Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens.

Officers have issued 18 total citations in the last week to people for bypassing checkpoints and entering unsafe areas, the Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) said in a statement.

Officers pursued the suspect to a residence located just above Government Beach Road and arrested him; they then expedited their way back out of the area through the "Four Corner" intersection area as the lava flow was within 50-100 feet from crossing onto the roadway and cutting off an exit route.

Authorities since Wednesday had been urging residents of the area to leave before lava spewing from a volcanic fissure at the eastern foot of Kilauea reached the area. "And I don't know what to do", she said.

Three people were evacuated from an isolated part of the Kapoho community Sunday, according to the Hawaii Fire Department.

The state is issuing citations to those who needed to be rescued from mandatory evacuation areas.

According to Discover, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) was able to guide first responders via drone to rescue a Hawaiian man whose home was on the verge of being engulfed by lava from the Kilauea volcano.
