Williams works hard to win against Barty

02 June 2018

Serena Williams admits she is not at the level she was before giving birth last September, but the 36-year-old believes she will return to top form and aims to get even better. And she did so in incredibly memorable-and badass-fashion.

Barty managed to stay with her as the two players treated the crowd to some excellent tennis but could not get the break back as Williams grew stronger on serve as the match progressed.

But Williams seems to be eyeing the chance to break the world record of 24 Grand Slam wins now held by the Australian tennis star, Margaret Court. But Williams' movement around the court is not as slick as she would like - although she has played only five singles matches since her daughter's birth.

Euro losses build in Asia as Italy plunges into political crisis
The new jitters about the stability of the euro sent the currency's value against the dollar to its lowest level in nearly a year. The euro might survive an Italian exit, but it would "put Italy, the euro area economy and the European Union in deep distress".

Williams once again appeared in her striking, all-black catsuit.

As many have been before her, Barty began to look overawed by the force of Williams' personality.

After Williams beat Kristya Pliskova at the French open at Stade Roland Garros, Paris on Tuesday, she spoke about the meaning behind her black bodysuit. Pliskova has won six of her last eight matches on clay court. Sharapova won 49 percent of her return points and produced six breaks in her second round victory.

Militants attack Afghan ministry with bomb, grenades and gunfire
Wednesday's attack came hours after Taliban suicide bombers stormed a police station in Logar province south of Kabul, where three officers were killed.

Williams fired herself up to turn the tide, though, showing great defense and anticipation to put away a forehand for an immediate break back before letting out a roar after a rasping backhand victor put her a break up at 3-1.

Serena Williams is officially back! She said: "People would say I was born a guy, all because of my arms, or because I'm strong". Barty took over a year away from the game of tennis also-but in her case, it was to pursue a professional cricket career. She looked in danger of bowing out in the second round of Roland Garros for the second time in three years (it happened in 2014) before rallying back. Nadal, a 10-time champion in Paris, hasn't lost a set at the French Open since 2015.

Alongside her sister Venus, Serena will take to the doubles court on Friday against Kirsten Flipkins and Sara Errani.
