"We're talking to them now", Trump said of the North Koreans.
He did not confirm how the secret meeting was arranged.
Observers of the soap opera-style Trump-Kim summit drama could be forgiven for thinking that a fragile courtship is underway, where the tenor of each side's statements will determine whether the two can agree to sit down together.
The president's comments on Twitter came barely 24 hours after he wrote to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to cancel the disarmament talks, saying Pyongyang had been showing too much "hostility" toward the U.S.
The summit was originally scheduled in a surprise development after months of escalating threats and insults between the two leaders after North Korea's multiple tests previous year of nuclear bombs and intercontinental ballistic missiles which it claimed were capable of reaching the USA mainland.

The leaders held talks for two hours in the same Panmunjom truce village where they had met last month, making a declaration vowing to improve ties.

Trump has already met President Xi of China for trade talks but has been characteristically unsatisfied with the results. He said "too many jobs in China " were being lost after the USA banned the sales of American-made components to ZTE .
Trump eventually pulled the plug on talks in a personal letter to Kim on Thursday. She says they were "really excited about the possibility of finally ending the threat of nuclear war on their border, very enthusiastic about a different approach".
"Kim has created sort of a cushion for failure that if the U.S. backs away, the Chinese and Russians will be behind him", Wit said.
"What you saw was increasing North Korean anger leading the USA to cancel the summit. you've got two sides who are both disruptive-type leaders and it's difficult to get two disruptive-type leaders to get together when they've never met before and when they both practise a certain kind of diplomacy that's about bomb-this, and threats, and its hard to see how those two kinds of leaders can get together in a peaceful summit kind of fashion".
But others said Trump's demonstrated willingness to walk away could yet extract further concessions from Pyongyang. They discussed carrying out the peace commitments they reached in their first summit, as well as Kim's potential meeting with Trump, Moon's office said.
But the North's Vice-Foreign Minister, Kim Kye-gwan, then struck a more conciliatory tone, calling Mr Trump's decision "unexpected" and "extremely regrettable".
