Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) said about the Santa Fe High School shooting, "Once again, Texas has seen the face of evil" ["Gunman kills 10 at Texas high school", front page, May 19].

The students who survived the Parkland shooting weren't too young that they could be dismissed as being told what to say by adults (although that happened) or too old that they could be accused of having a political agenda (although that happened too). The first one features officials from school districts that arm some teachers or contract with local police for security. Some of the students who participated in the walkout were from Santa Fe High School. He is charged with capital murder of 10 people - eight students and two teachers.

Gun rights proponents say it prohibits regulations on gun ownership and that enforcement of existing laws should be sufficient to stop violent incidents like the one in Santa Fe. "I don't know what happened", he said. He has not entered a plea to the charges of capital murder of multiple people and aggravated assault on a public servant.

Abbott said he'll meet Wednesday with gun rights and gun control advocacy groups and Thursday with victims of the attack at Santa Fe High School and the November attack on a church in Sutherland Springs.

Greg Abbott has convened the first of three roundtable meetings to address school violence and safety.

Among the measures coming out of the meeting that Abbott said he would like to see implemented quickly were expanding school safety training programs, bolstering threat assessment systems and expanding a pilot program created to screen for students who might be a threat to themselves or others.

Parents have been instructed by the school district to pick up children at a baseball field roughly a half mile from the school. Dixon Mayor Liandro Arellano Jr. said it appears a graduation practice was going on at the time of the incident.

Abbott started the meeting in Austin by discussing the format. It will include advocates both for and against further gun restrictions, mental health experts and social media experts, he said.

Wall said that the district will later provide additional information to students on academics, campus activities and end of the year procedures.
