Harvey Weinstein Arrested on Charges of Rape, Sex Abuse and More

25 May 2018

He has been charged with rape, criminal sex conduct act, sex abuse, and sexual misconduct against two women, the New York Police Department said.

A month ago, comedian Bill Cosby was convicted of drugging and sexually assaulting a onetime friend, one of dozens of women who have accused him of sexual misconduct. "I would say it's just so big".

Weinstein flinched as he heard the description.

Mr Weinstein has denied committing any non-consensual sex acts. "Bad behavior is not on trial in this case", Brafman said.

Judge Kevin McGrath ordered Weinstein released on $US1 million ($1.3 million) cash bail.

Mr Braffman added that the allegations against Weinstein are "entirely without merit". He did not respond when a woman shouted: "Why are you smiling, Harvey?"

NEW YORK NY- MAY 25 Harvey Weinstein arrives at the New York Police Department's First Precinct to turn himself in after being served with criminal charges by the Manhattan District Attorney's office

Asked "What can you say?" he mildly shook his head and softly said "No".

The case marks the first criminal charges against the Hollywood mogul after months of sexual abuse allegations from scores of women, which destroyed his career and catalysed the #MeToo movement.

The Manhattan District Attorney's office and the NYPD have been investigating Weinstein in relation to some of those claims, including one from Lucia Evans in which she alleged he forced her to perform oral sex on him in 2004. She also applauded the women who came forward.

Brafman, Weinstein's lawyer, told reporters outside the court that his client will enter a plea of "not guilty" to the charges.

That's common at this stage in a criminal case in NY.

"At a certain point, you have to think about the greater good of humanity, of womankind", she told the magazine.

"I actually did not believe this day would come", she said on NBC's "Megyn Kelly Today" program. When she got there, Weinstein appeared; Evans recalled the assault, "I said, over and over, 'I don't want to do this, stop, don't.' I tried to get away, but maybe I didn't try hard enough".

"Today's charges reflect significant progress in this active, ongoing investigation", said District Attorney Cyrus Vance, thanking "brave survivors" for coming forward and urging others to call a sex crimes hotline. Some women's groups, including the Hollywood activist group Time's Up, accused the Democrat of being too deferential to Weinstein and too dismissive of his accusers. The film producer has until next week to decide whether to tesitfy before a grand jury.

"They were not reported to the police at the time these events occurred and I anticipate that the women who have made these allegations, when subjected to cross examination - in the event we even get that far - that the charges will not be believed by 12 people, assuming we get 12 fair people who are not consumed by the movement that seems to have overtaken this case". That investigation is in its preliminary stages.

More than 75 women have accused Weinstein of wrongdoing around the globe.

Actress Rose McGowan, among the first to accuse Weinstein of sexual assault, said seeing images of him in handcuffs was surreal. He must wear an ankle bracelet and can only travel within the NY or CT.

Cuban officials dismissed the idea of acoustic strikes as "science fiction" and accused Washington of slander. It added the Chinese Government told the embassy it is also investigating and taking appropriate measures.

Weinstein arrives at a police precinct in NY amid reports he is to be charged by authorities in the United States.

The mogul's career went down in flames last October over sexual assault allegations following bombshell articles in The New York Times and New Yorker, which sparked a sexual harassment watershed across the United States and won both outlets a Pulitzer. Britain has no statute of limits on rape cases; some of the allegations under investigation there date to the 1980s.
