Tennessee joins states suing OxyContin maker

Lawsuits have already been filed by 16 other USA states and Puerto Rico against Purdue.

The lawsuit also alleges that the drug company downplayed concerns about opioid addictions by "hyping" a concept known as "pseudo-addiction".

"When doctors expressed concerns about these risky and addictive drugs on their patients, Purdue tried to not only minimize those concerns but to encourage the doctors to prescribe them more", Stein said. "It represents a callous disregard for human life that Texans simply can not and will not tolerate". "As Purdue got rich from sales of its opioids, Texans and others across the nation were swept up in a public health crisis that led to tens of thousands of deaths each year due to opioid overdoses".

Stenehjem says depending on how the settlement progresses goes, the state could amend its complaint to add other manufactures or bring separate suits.

While the state is seeking extensive financial damages from Purdue, Paxton said Tuesday that his immediate goal is securing an injunction that would force Purdue to stop misrepresenting its drugs in the state.

This is in addition to a larger investigation into multiple drug manufacturers and distributors Stein and 40 other attorneys general launched. The defendants include opioid manufacturers Purdue Pharma LP, J&J, Teva, Endo International Plc and drug distributors AmerisourceBergen Corp, Cardinal Health Inc and McKesson Corp.

Connecticut-based Purdue denied the claims in an email statement that said it will defend itself.

Five other states also launched suits against Purdue on Tuesday.
