Underwood, who officials said is the first woman to hold the office in ny, will serve as attorney general until the state Senate and Assembly can vote on a replacement by joint ballot.

Asked for comment before he announced he would resign, Schneiderman, a Democrat, issued a statement saying, "In the privacy of intimate relationships, I have engaged in role-playing and other consensual sexual activity".

On Tuesday, Cuomo confirmed New York Solicitor General Barbara Underwood would take over as interim attorney general until the general election in November.

Both women described Schneiderman's behavior as fueled by very heavy drinking that turned him from a public champion for women to a private "monster". In New York, she worked in senior positions in state and federal prosecutors' offices in Brooklyn and Queens.

Schneiderman was elected to the post in 2010 and re-elected in 2014.

In a report published by the New Yorker on Monday, two women who were romantically involved with Schneiderman at separate times between 2013 and 2017, Michelle Manning Barish and Tanya Selvaratnam, accused him of slapping them across the ear and face and choking them without their consent. Mr. Schneiderman promoted the rights of women to choose what we do with our own bodies, and then is accused of personally turning sexual interactions into violent, degrading acts done to his female partners. He filed a lawsuit in February against movie producer Harvey Weinstein and the Weinstein Co. following an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct, saying the company broke NY law by failing to protect employees from "pervasive sexual harassment, intimidation and discrimination".

In the decade since Eliot Spitzer resigned as governor amid reports he had solicited and slept with a prostitute, more than two dozen NY state legislators have stepped down or been convicted in a variety of corruption cases, including former Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos and former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver.

Picente continued: Women should never have to live in fear of any man. Women should never have to fear retribution from the state's attorney general for coming forward to speak out against patterns of repulsive abuse. "I have not assaulted anyone", Schneiderman said. Among the laws he helped pass during his 12 years in the NY state senate was a penalty for strangulation.

He said the Miami Heat , who the 76ers convincingly beat in the first round of the playoffs 4-1, were more physical than Boston. Once he landed, the eager 21-year-old simply turned around and jogged back up the court just he normally would.

"The allegations against Eric Schneiderman are sick and disturbing, and should be fully investigated", Amedore said.

"Sen. Warren must immediately do the right thing and return, or donate to an appropriate non-profit, all the donations raised for her campaign by Eric Schneiderman", Kingston said in a written statement Tuesday. Or that the hundreds, if not thousands, of pages of legal filings the state of ny has filed in high-profile disputes ranging from Trump's crackdown on sanctuary cities to his ill-conceived travel ban are now good for nothing. "But I suppose you can say that about other people who were embroiled in scandals".

"It's just a shame that it has to be at the highest level of New York State law enforcement", said Lupardo. Several lawmakers said they think the Legislature needs to appoint a woman to the job.

Donald Trump Jr. also slammed Schneiderman, taking to Twitter to say, "Hey Eric, it's not "role play" if only one of you is in on it".
