Global demand for the new 2018 Ford Mustang has driven Mustang to its third straight year as the best-selling sports coupe in the world. Ford said it sold almost 126,000 Mustang coupes and convertibles in 2017 across 146 different countries.
Of the almost 126,000 vehicles registered worldwide, Ford reported 81,866 of those were registered in the United States, meaning just over one-third of all Mustang registrations are occurring in export markets. Ford points out the China was a particularly strong foreign market, with 7,125 new registrations making the Mustang the bestselling sporty 2-door among Chinese drivers.
The one the world wants most is the stonking V8-powered Mustang GT.
The Ford Performance global organisation serves as an innovation laboratory and test-bed to create unique performance vehicles, parts, accessories and experiences for customers. "It could only be found on TV or the internet, and now it rolls down streets from Beijing to Sao Paulo".

The new Ford Mustang will make its Australian track debut at the first round of the Supercars Series in March 2019 at the Adelaide 500.
"That (change) was driven based upon the excitement of (the Mustang) and the performance that we think we can get out of it, so it does not signify or signal anything about the Fusion or its road auto future", Mark Rushbrook, global director of Ford Performance, said Tuesday.
"We've been working with the teams to ensure they have the best technical support to make Mustang a victor", said Ford Australia boss Graeme Whickman at a launch event for the Ford Performance brand in Melbourne.
Both racing outfits are understood to have already undertaken exploratory mechanical and aerodynamic research on the Mustang, which will require significant body modifications to fit over the control Supercars platform.

Ford has used the Mustang in the NASCAR Xfinity Series since 2011.
"This announcement makes me very happy", said Edsel B. Ford II, a member of Ford Motor Company's board of directors.
Queensland's DJR Team Penske, along with Victorian-based former Ford factory outfit Tickford Racing, are still campaigning the FG-X, nearly two years after the vehicle ceased production locally, and both outfits will be tasked with developing the Mustang to suit Supercars' so-called Gen2 regulations. A public unveiling of the finished product will soon follow.

Ford officials say the Mustang is still going through testing and designs will be formally submitted to NASCAR for approval this summer. It'll make its official points-race debut at the Daytona 500 on February 17, 2019.
