Most of the time, the rockets utilize various methods of making a landing that does not destroy them in the process.

SpaceX, based in the Los Angeles suburb of Hawthorne, already uses the Port of Los Angeles for missions that recover Falcon 9 first-stage boosters on a floating platform in the Pacific and when it recovers supply capsules that parachute into the ocean after missions to the global space station.

NASA has been researching "inflatable entry systems" in space missions for some time now. SpaceX has plans to keep all its rocket stages intact this way.

Shinzo Abe back on the ropes
Abe has said he "would quit as prime minister and lawmaker" if he or his wife were found to be involved in the land deal. Among the major powers in Northeast Asia, Japan has been left out of the recent flurry of diplomacy with North Korea .

Musk gave few details about how or when SpaceX might attempt to use a big balloon to recover an upper stage.

Musk said the first, unmanned BFR mission to Mars could take place as early as 2022. "Can [definitely] be done, just about minimizing mass".

The total cost of one of its Falcon 9 launches is estimated to reach £44 million ($61m), while each of its larger Falcon Heavy flights costs £65 million ($90m). Up until now, SpaceX has landed nine Falcon 9 rockets on earth.

Increasingly competitive pricing - along with a reliable Falcon 9 rocket - have made SpaceX an attractive rocket vendor to the likes of NASA, private companies, and other nations.

Musk's tunneling firm, the Boring Company, began selling flamethrowers online after the CEO teased the idea in a tweet.

Koenigsmann fielded a question asking if SpaceX would try to purposefully de-orbit the second stage of the rocket used for the TESS launch. Musk has called it a "catcher's mitt" in boat form.
