Protesters, Riot Police Clash In Armenia

In the Armenian Parliament - the national Assembly - 11:00 Kyiv time launched a special meeting, which shall discuss the candidacy of ex-President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan for the post of Prime Minister and to vote on the matter.

An Associated Press reporter saw several people wounded and at least four of them were transported away by ambulance including protest leader Nikol Pashinian.

Pashinian led his supporters to Bagramian Avenue after spending several hours blocking traffic through most streets in downtown Yerevan. He resigned as president a week earlier and, under a new constitution that makes the prime minister the country's most powerful figure, is set to extend his unpopular rule indefinitely.

The Armenian Health Ministry reported later that 46 people required medical assistance after the clash.

Protests led by Armenian opposition MP and leader of Civil Contract Party Nikol Pashinyan were held in the Amenian capital city Yerevan on Monday.

Many in the crowd of protesters said Pashinian's call for the demonstrations to remain nonviolent helped convince them to join in.

People oppose the appointment of former President Serzh Sargsyan, Prime Minister.

But the tension ultimately snapped when, in the afternoon, Sargsyan gave his first public reaction to the nomination by his party, the ruling Republican Party of Armenia.

A shrewd former military officer, Sarkisian has been in charge of the landlocked South Caucasus nation of 2.9 million since winning a presidential vote in 2008.

Sargsyan's second term as president ended on April 9, and the country is now poised to transition to a parliamentary republic from a presidential republic.
