Environment Canada: "Potentially historic" ice storm to hit region

It will be a rainy day on Friday, ahead of a storm system that could leave the GTA covered in ice this weekend.

The warning, which will go into effect at 2 p.m. on Saturday, warns that "significant icing and gusty winds" are expected, and that the ice accumulations will be around one half-inch.

Tomorrow, weather forecasters say freezing rain will hit the region before changing to rain Sunday evening.

As this weather system is still a few days away, there remains uncertainty with regards to precipitation amounts and which areas will be most affected.

Environment Canada said freezing rain, ice pellets and snow are affecting areas stretching from Windsor, Ont., up to the Muskoka region and east to Ottawa.

The best chance of seeing ice storm conditions will be between northern Kent County and Cadillac Saturday night and Sunday morning.
