A Chinese couple who died more than four years ago had a son born to a surrogate mother, Chinese media outlets reported.
The biological parents had embryos frozen that they hoped would one day become their children during rounds of in vitro fertilization, the Beijing News reports. Five days before they were scheduled to transplant one of the fertilized embryos into Liu, the couple died in a auto accident in March 2013 in the Chinese coastal province of Jiangsu.
After the accident, their parents fought a long legal battle to be allowed to use the embryos.

She described another incident to the committee during which she said he smacked her, grabbed her and shoved her to the ground. He also is under investigation by the state's attorney general into the activities of a veterans charity he founded.
According to South China Morning Post, the grandparents were overjoyed that Tiantian finally made it into the world after years of stuggle and will continue on their bloodline.
The tot was born after an embryo was placed in a surrogate, following years of legal disputes over whether it could be used.
With no parents left to prove paternity, all four grandparents had to give blood and take DNA tests to establish that the baby was indeed their grandson and that both parents had been Chinese nationals.
The great stigma around Masters champ Reed

"First we thought of using air freight, but none of the airlines were willing to take the thermos-sized bottle of liquid nitrogen where the four embryos were stored", Liu Baojun, a surrogacy expert who assisted the families, told The Beijing News. The next problem for the little one was the issue of his citizenship, so the surrogate mother traveled with a tourist visa to China to give birth to him.
Dr Ding Lijun, from the hospital that originally held the embryos, told China Daily that although hospital authorities were sympathetic to the families involved, they were cautious about handing embryos to individuals.
"Tiantian's eyes look like my daughter's but overall, he looks more like his father", she said.
The new grandparents have not yet decided how they will tell Tiantian about his background. "We'll tell him in the future".
