Prince Philip admitted to hospital for planned hip surgery

05 April 2018

In his customary good humor, Philip joked to a well-wisher who said he was sorry the duke of Edinburgh was standing down shortly after the retirement announcement by responding, "Standing down?"

This evening's announcement confirms that The Queen's husband underwent a full hip replacement procedure.

The palace said Prince Philip is "progressing satisfactorily at this early stage" and is likely to spend several days at King Edward VII Hospital in London.

He is expected to remain in the private hospital for several days.

He is said to be "comfortable and in good spirits".

Mark Zuckerberg will testify before Congress next week
The announcement comes ahead of CEO Mark Zuckerberg's widely anticipated testimony before Congress next week. The Senate Commerce and Judiciary committees also have called for Zuckerberg to appear before them.

"The Duke of Edinburgh has undergone a successful hip replacement operation". At times blunt to the point of rudeness, Philip is Elizabeth's most important support. It was said that the absence was due to his hip problem.

But Philip does not walk with the aid of a stick as the Queen Mother did and was spotted last week driving himself around Windsor Great Park, leading to speculation he may have a problem with torn cartilage.

Philip withdrew in March from a planned appearance with his son, Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, at Windsor Castle to mark Andrew's role as colonel of the Grenadier Guards, which he is taking over from Philip.

His final solo engagement was in August past year, when he reviewed a parade of Royal Marines outside Buckingham Palace in his capacity as Captain General of the corps.

Last June, Prince Philip spent two nights in hospital as a "precautionary measure" for the treatment of an undisclosed infection.

Sinclair's forced script reveals the corrupt hypocrisy of its motives
Co-host Mika Brzezinski said she was surprised some of the local anchors didn't refuse to read it. The company owns ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox outlets, and the Sinclair branding is not always clear.

He has carried out about 22,000 solo royal engagements since Elizabeth became Queen in 1952.

It has not been revealed how long he will be in hospital and if he will miss any upcoming events this spring, most notably the wedding of his grandson Harry to former actress Meghan Markle on 19 May.

King Edward VII's Hospital, in Marylebone, was founded in 1899 and has treated other senior members of the royal family, including the Queen, the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge.

There will be physiotherapy exercises to do at home and crutches are needed for about four to six weeks.
