Ibrahimovic makes dream LA debut

02 April 2018

Zlatan Ibrahimovich showed his mettle in his MLS debut as his two goals -including a 40-yard volley in an entertaining game, helped LA Galaxy to a 4-3 victory against Los Angeles FC.

Ibrahimovic, who came on as a substitute in the 71st minute, scored six minutes into his first MLS game with a dipping 35-metre shot that soared over the outstretched arms of LAFC goalie Tyler Miller.

Former Arsenal of England forward Carlos Vela had struck twice to put the visitors ahead before L A Galaxy pulled one back in the 61st minute.

Gardendale opened spring break play with a 4-2 win over Class 5A No. 5 Etowah on Monday thanks to a three-run fifth inning. Top Loyalsock hitters: Juliana Cruz 2-2; Katie Welker 3-4, 2 SB; Sam Stopper 2-3, 5 RBIs, 3 runs; Summer McNulty 3-4, 3B.

Galaxy coach Sigi Schmid hailed Ibrahimovic's first goal as "world class".

The Swede who was making his debut for the Galaxy was brought off the bench to score a stunning volley to bring his side level against Los Angeles FC before also going on to bag the victor. You can't do something brilliant unless you dare to be brilliant, and Ibrahimovic is a ideal definition of the guy who always dares to be brilliant. He is the all-time leading goalscorer for the Swedish National Team.

Zlatan arrived in Los Angeles after being released by Manchester United on March 22.

The script of the match was befitting of Ibra's new Hollywood home and LAFC had raced to a 3-0 lead within 60 minutes with Zlatan still on the bench.

Ibrahimovic had talked boldly on Friday of helping restore the Galaxy to their position of dominance in Major League Soccer after a dismal 2017 campaign that saw them finish bottom of the Western Conference.

But Los Angeles did not have to wait long for the second, with Vela beating Bingham before coolly taking his time to lift his shot into the goal off the underside of the bar.

The Yanks' GM quipped before Thursday's opener that he's now "switched it to the Big Engine That Could". It's probably more accurate to say that this new universe full of round-trippers is our new normal.

Ibrahimovic then popped up with a victor in the 91st minute. But an own goal by a Galaxy player had compounded their problems as their hopes of levelling the game looked bleak.
