Going head-to-head in its door-to-door war with behemoth Amazon, as well against as legacy supermarkets and upstart wholesale clubs, Walmart said yesterday that it is expanding its Online Grocery Delivery option from six metro areas to more than 100 of its markets - containing more than 40% of us households - by the end of the year. While the exact metro areas haven't been disclosed, Walmart claims the expansion will allow its delivery service to serve 40 percent of USA households.
"We're going to gain customers who might not have access to a brick-and-mortar store", he said.
Unlike Amazon Fresh, however, there's no subscription fee involved for Walmart's online delivery service.
Walmart said it employs more than 18,000 personal shoppers, and plans to add "thousands" more this year. The retailer experimented with other last-mile delivery options since then, including a pilot that has store associates delivering online orders on their way home from work.

Interestingly, Amazon was the pioneer in online grocery delivery, launching its AmazonFresh service in Seattle more eleven years ago.
The retail giant announced it will launch an online grocery delivery service in over 100 cities. Customers can place their orders at the dedicated walmart.com/grocery website or use the Walmart Grocery app on their smartphones.

Walmart Grocery Delivery includes fresh produce, meat, seafood and bakery items, along with pantry staples, consumables and seasonal general merchandise.
The Amazon/Whole Foods delivery is available to Prime members-which costs $99 annually-in six cities now.
Walmart was previously only testing out the service in six cities.
