At least 50 dead after plane crash lands at Kathmandu

Dozens of passengers died Monday after a Bangladeshi passenger plane crash landed at Kathmandu International Airport in Nepal, authorities said.

Officials at Kathmandu Medical College, the closest hospital to Nepal's only global airport, said they were treating 16 survivors of the Q400 crash, whose earlier versions were called Dash 8.

The Dhaka-based US-Bangla Airlines is a private carrier that launched in July 2014 with the motto "Fly Fast Fly Safe".

At least eight people died in the crash, according to The Daily Star in Bangladesh.

"So far 49 people are dead and 22 are undergoing treatment at different hospitals", Sanjiv Gautam, executive director of the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), told reporters. It then landed into an empty field and burst into flames around 150 feet from the runway, The New York Times said.

Flight BS211 veered off the runway after trying to land at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, Nepal.

An airline official said some injured passengers had been taken away by ambulance.

Just two months later, a Pakistan International Airlines plane crashed as it approached the airport, killing all 167 people on board.

According to Raj Kumar Chettri, general manager of the airport, flight BS-211, which covered the Dhaka-Kathmandu route, collided with a fence of the facility when it descended on the runway.

Officials, however, say a technical glitch could have caused the accident.

In March 2015, a Turkish Airlines plane skidded off the runway in dense fog, but passengers only sustained minor injuries. It is a subsidiary of US-Bangla Group, a United States-Bangladesh joint venture company.

Survivor Sanam Shakya, who climbed out of a window of the smouldering plane, said he didn t realise the aircraft was in trouble until it hit the ground.

In May, 2012, Agni Air's Dornier 228-212 (9N-AIG) crashed near Jomsom Airport in Mustang, killing 15 people.
