What to expect at the Academy Awards

05 March 2018

Last year's victor for best actor, however, won't present the 2018 victor for best actress with her award.

Bets are being taken for tonight's 90th Academy Awards on everything from who will win Best Actor to the length of the acceptance speeches. Again, his past credits all add to his viability on winning the award and the fact that he hasn't won an Oscar already really needs to be addressed. The only other person in her category who comes close to having the emotional impact, while remaining nearly drastically human, is Laurie Metcalf in "Lady Bird".

The field is made up largely of modest independent film successes except for the box-office phenomenon "Get Out" ($255 million worldwide after opening on Oscar weekend 2017) and "Dunkirk" ($255 million).

Two other movies are also tipped to take home three Oscars apiece. Willem Dafoe would also be a very worthy victor for The Florida Project.

I haven't seen a single nominee. But Jordan Peele's political thriller "Get Out", Greta Gerwig's coming-of-age film "Lady Bird", and the war drama "Dunkirk" are also seen as contenders.

LeBron James flirts with a triple-double Thursday in Cavaliers' loss
The Los Angeles Lakers' Isaiah Thomas reached a season's best 29 points against the Miami Heat to lift his team to a 131-113 win. After Embiid sscored 17 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Sixers to the win, Embiid tweeted a picture of him and Lebron James .

Also nominated is the animated film "The Breadwinner", which is a Canadian co-production.

Happy viewing, and may the best Meryl win.

There is an exceptional amount of excitement for the film "Call Me by Your Name", and for good reason, it was a really good movie.

He is also only the fifth black person ever nominated for best director - after John Singleton, Lee Daniels, Steve McQueen and Barry Jenkins - and could be the first to win.

While fans of Guillermo del Toro do not roundly consider the merman gothic fairy tale "The Shape of Water" his best picture - many rank it behind "The Devil's Backbone" and "Pan's Labyrinth" - all the momentum is there to secure him the win.

Study Identifies Five Types of Diabetes, Not Just Two
Specialists said the study was a messenger without bounds of diabetes mind yet changes to treatment would not be quick. Around one-fifth of patients belonged to cluster 4 , defined by a presence of obesity without insulin resistance.

Then, there's "Get Out", the horror film that has earned plenty of recognition this award season and could shock the world. Logan, the final film for Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, became the first superhero film to be nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. Sally Hawkins and Margot Robbie were great in their respective films but no one came close to McDormand for me.

Who should win: The Big Sick was a sensational film and its screenplay was sublime. The writing worked on several levels, and it led to great plot twists, and chances for its actors to be amusing and menacing, which will draw the votes from many members of the academy. If you don't wish to get up early on Monday, you can catch a repeat telecast at 8:30pm IST. But, with the Russian sports doping doc "Icarus", and the acclaimed "Last Men in Aleppo", a victor could just as easy be called from a coin flip.

In another nod to the women's movements, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has tapped past winners, Jennifer Lawrence and Jodie Foster, to present the best actress Oscar, according to Variety.

This year there are nine nominations and every one is worthy. Rockwell is a master at playing unpredictable, unhinged men, and, because his Dixon undergoes a transformation - which is catnip for academy voters - he was able to show his range. While actors seem to love "Three Billboards" and have shown a lot of love to its cast, I think we have to look past the acting bodies. That is all I have, though, and I think it will cap off a perfectly respectable Oscar night.

Who should win: Christopher Nolan, without doubt.

Tiger Woods adds another start in Tampa to pre-Masters run
The Valspar Championship at Innisbrook Resort's Copperhead Course will represent Woods' fourth PGA Tour start of the season. The golf world expected Woods to play Bay Hill, where he has nearly a.500 record in his 17 starts.

Jonah Crismore is programming director at the Embassy Theatre and a movie buff.
