Laura Muir takes silver as Doyle wins 400m bronze

05 March 2018

After an uneventful first kilometer which was covered in a pedestrian 3:14.67, noted front-runner Konstanze Klosterhalfen -who broke the 30-year-old German indoor record with a solo effort of 8:36.01 at her domestic championships in Dortmund two weeks ago- was the first of the 14 finalists to move to the front with any goal.

A year ago Muir claimed a special double when she won the 1500 metres and 3000m at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade.

She has always been earmarked as the leading home hope in the post-Mo Farah years, and that was supported with European indoor golds at 1500m and 3000m last year.

Not as fully loaded as the 3000m, from which Muir emerged to take her first global medal, but extremely high calibre nonetheless, led by Genzebe Dibaba, the world record holder at the distance, and Sifan Hassan, the reigning indoor world champion.

Liz's daughter Eilish was Muir's team-mate here and, like Muir, is doubling up at 1500m. "I just thought "stay with them, be controlled" and I came off with silver this time".

Dibaba crossed the finish-line in 8:45.05, a finishing time made respectable courtesy of a scintillating final kilometer of 2:37.43.

BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND (01-Mar) - Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia became the third athlete to win the women's 3000m title at the IAAF World Indoor Championships on at least three occasions in an exciting climax to the first day which had a sparse but enthusiastic home crowd cheering the narrow but growing possibility of a home victor in Laura Muir on the last lap.

Muir said trackside: "I just got a taste of it after the 3,000".

Dibaba's final kilometre was 2:37 - around 7:52 pace - and the second half a very fast 4:04, which was 37 seconds quicker than the first half! This is a great competition and the race was fantastic.

She has won three world indoor titles, 1500m in 2012 and the last two 3000m crowns. "I tried for the silver but I'm over the moon given the calibre of athlete in that race. It was very close but I had to play my cards right". Her performance in the 3,000m on the opening evening of the championships tomorrow night will also set the tone for the 31-strong British team.

"I'm surprised I wasn't good in 2017 but 2018 is my time". I had to dig in on that last lap.

"I felt so much more relaxed here than I was at Sopot four years ago when the pressure got to me". She did her utmost to try and chase down Dibaba but Dibaba was just too good.

Kenya's Hellen Onsando Obiri reacts after winning the final of the women's 5000m athletics event at the 2017 IAAF World Championships at the London Stadium in London on August 13, 2017. The European 60m hurdles champion was the quickest qualifier in the field in 7.53sec.

There was more disappointment for Great Britain in the women's high jump as Morgan Lake's season's best jump of 1.93m wasn't enough to sneak into the medal positions as she finished fourth, with Italy's Alessia Trost taking bronze.
