Russia Vetoes UN Resolution Blaming Iran for Illegally Arming Yemeni Houthis

02 March 2018

The draft resolution, backed by France and the United States, called for unspecified measures in response to the UN report about Iran's alleged role in Yemen, stressing that the UNSC will take "additional measures to address these violations", and that "any activity related to the use of ballistic missiles in Yemen" is a criteria for sanctions.

This doesn't recognise that the Iranian Regime is already dangerously destabilising Yemen through its support of the Houthis.

The latest British draft dropped the condemnation and instead expressed concern that United Nations experts monitoring the sanctions reported Iran had violated a targeted arms embargo by failing to stop missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles reaching the Houthis.

Russia, however, questioned the findings and blocked the resolution, saying the report did not contain conclusive evidence of Iran's violation of the arms embargo.

The UN's independent panel of experts, which monitors the implementation of sanctions, concluded in its most recent report that Iran had failed to prevent weapons transfers to the Houthis.

The war between the Houthis and the coalition-backed government of President Abdrabu Mansur Hadi has killed more than 10,000 people since 2015, displaced more than 2 million and destroyed much of the country's infrastructure, including the health system.

The four countries also called on all parties involved to comply with global humanitarian and human rights law, to continue allowing humanitarian aid to enter, and to return to peace talks.
