Here's What You Need to Know Before Watching Women's Figure Skating Tonight

23 February 2018

Alina Zagitova, an Olympic Athlete from Russian Federation, has set a world record in figure skating's women's singles short program, topping a record set only 15 minutes earlier by her team-mate Yevgenia Medvedeva.

Zagitova received 82.92 points, thus breaking the world record of another Russian athlete Evgenia Medvedeva. She skated two clean programs to win nationals in January, forcing her way onto the Olympic team. Her world record winning program is built around the theme of "clinical death", and in the past she's courted controversy by skating to a track from "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" that included audio from the September 11 terrorist attacks. Medvedeva, 18, broke the world record with her poignant and near-perfect free skate (she scored 81.61). Ahead of the free dance finals on February 23, get familiar on one of the youngest athletes at the Olympics. "It was not my best, but it was OK", she said. I just want to skate clean for myself. "If somebody had told me that two or three or even one year ago, I would have been very surprised". "When I saw on the gondola the sun rising up, I felt good".

Kurt Browning, a four-time world champion and three-time Olympian, agrees. Nagasu, 24 and the fourth-place finisher in 2014 at Vancouver, earned 66.93 points, a season best, but was ninth.

Kaetlyn Osmond's Olympic figure skating bronze breaks Canadian medals record

For almost two years, Russia's Evgenia Medvedeva was so far superior to the rest of women's figure skating that her rivals struggled to come up with ways to accurately describe her supremacy.

Karen Chen also had a slip in her program to finish with a scored of 65.90 and is in 10th place.

Medvedeva said she has so many talented, young rivals in her country armed with hard elements and jumps, and that "it just forces you to be stronger". Her friend and fellow countrywoman, Alina Zagitova, 15, are favored to win gold and silver, so get to know about her before she hits the ice.

Gerolymatos says it's clear Atwal was not properly vetted, and believes this points to serious gaps in Trudeau's security detail. Canadian lawmaker Randeep S Sarai then issued a statement, saying he was responsible for inviting Atwal to the reception dinner.

Osmond is a terrific short program skater and her Black Swan long program is exquisite. A solid jumper with a flair for characterization (in this season's free skate, she's Anna Karenina), Medvedeva is a staunch competitor who has had no competition.

Fifteen-year-old Zagitova, who won the 2018 European Championship and is the Grand Prix Final champion, said, "Emotions are running high". She uncharacteristically fell on her opening triple-triple combination, which left her with 64.01 points.

Americans Nagasu and Tennell wish their recent success could have carried over into the short program. No other female skater - not Zagitova, not Medvedeva - had gone fall-less this season. She attempted to put the triple toe onto her triple loop later in the program, put managed only a double toe.

US champion Bradie Tennell went first among the 30 skaters, hardly an advantageous position.

Zagitova, the world junior champion last season, cleanly landed a triple lutz/triple loop combination jump, followed by a triple flip and a double axel. "Of course, I would have loved a gold medal but, honestly, this is fantastic and I'm so proud". "I'm not very fond of being in the first warm-up [group]".
