This is the astonishing Ferrari 488 Pista

22 February 2018

Ferrari has already confirmed development of the 488 Special Series and given the brand's penchant for secrecy we might not hear much more until its expected debut at the Geneva motor show next month. To match its rival from Britain, the Pista has been subjected to Ferrari's biggest jump yet between standard coupe and special model.

Lighter than before, the 4-litre 90-degree twin-turbo V8 engine makes 709 bhp@8000 rpm and 78.57 kgm@3000 rpm (in 7th gear). Interestingly, the 488 Pista weighs about 90kgs lesser than the 488 GTB. Lightweight engine parts - Inconel exhaust manifolds, lightweight crankshaft and flywheel, titanium con rods and carbon-fibre intake plenums - are central to the weight gain. With more power and less weight, Ferrari says the Pista will hit 62 miles per hour in 2.85 seconds and 124 miles per hour in 7.6.

And it's the only thing right now that can help the 10 American holdovers from that team ease the pain of their 2014 collapse. Net proceeds from the jersey auctions will be shared between the Hockey Canada Foundation and Canadian Olympic Foundation.

"Pista" means, simply, "Track", and the moniker is entirely apt as it's where the 2019 Ferrari 488 Pista will truly thrive.

While the Pista is based on the regular 488 GTB, Ferrari has heavily reworked the mid-engined supercar's bodywork in the quest for speed.

Winter Olympics 2018: Lindsey Vonn joins star exodus from team event
That matched the great 1984 team, comprised of Bill Johnson, Phil and Steve Mahre, Debbie Armstrong and Christin Cooper. But for all the hype surrounding Vonn, she is far from the only notable Olympic athlete competing this evening.

Aside from losing weight, Ferrari also made a decision to pump up the power. The 488 Pista isn't just sleeker, either, it produces 20 percent greater downforce than the GTB, in part courtesy of a Formula 1-style S-duct, which reroutes air from beneath the vehicle to above.

The eight-cylinder helps the Pista hit 62 mph from a stop in 2.8 seconds, 124 mph from a stop in 7.6 seconds, and go on to a top speed of over 211 mph. For comparison, the 488 GTB "only" produces 660 hp and 560 lb-ft of torque.

Donald Trump denies allegation of forcible kissing woman
Reacting to the front page story of Tuesday's Washington Post , the president took to Twitter to defend himself. On Tuesday, President Donald Trump fumed on Twitter over an allegation of sexual misconduct.

The design of the 488 Pista is focussed on functional aerodynamic concepts while the cockpit is pared back in keeping with its very sporty vocation. The front features a Formula One-inspired S-Duct and front diffusers with a ramp angle to increase downforce. Some of the upgrades include modified air intakes, a new rear diffuser, and a rear blown spoiler. Along with a host of fresh track-spec upgrades, for the first time ever, the company has introduced the Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer in the 488 Pista. This is a computer controlled system that adjusts brake pressure to control yaw angles, and without getting too technical, it's basically supposed to make even the most ham-fisted of us look like a driving ace behind the wheel.
