Apple rethinks software release schedule for iPhone, iPad and Mac

15 February 2018

According to Bloomberg, Apple will move to more of a two-year roadmap for iOS and MacOS "instead of keeping engineers on a relentless annual schedule and cramming features into a single update". To be clear, there will still be updates every year, but engineers will simply have more control over which ones they elect to get released or hold back if need be. The new strategy is meant to allow Apple to avoid releasing new features with bugs, avoid missing schedules and actually fulfill the promises it makes at its annual developer conference in June.

For years, Apple has stuck to a strict schedule of annual iOS releases that sport a sometimes dizzying array of new capabilities.

So, with Apple's new devices, they've taken away features and replaced them with more things to spend money on.

As previously reported, Apple is also planning to allow developers to release apps that work across iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Oh, and the iOS 12 update will have a redesigned, built-in Stocks app.

Bloomberg has now added some extra details to those initial reports.

Now referred to internally by the codename "Peace", one of the biggest features expected in iOS 12 is the ability for a single set of apps to work across iPhones, iPads and Mac computers.

The hope, it's clear, is to avoid some of the more embarrassing launches that have punctured Apple's reputation for software solidity in recent years. According to the Verge, Apple is also beta testing a way to disable throttling in its 11.3 iOS update.

Unfortunately, Maestri said that Apple expects to reduce the channel inventory levels of the company's latest iPhone models (iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X) in the current quarter.

Apple is definitely promising a lot with its upcoming software update.

Apple will reportedly merge its iOS and Mac App Stores so that users can buy an app once and run it across devices.

Apple is slowing the pace on iOS updates, with the Cupertino firm allegedly opting to get absolutely right a smaller number of changes in its flagship iPhone software. The list includes a redesigned home screen for the iPhone, iPad, and CarPlay, and a revamped Photos app that can suggest what images to view. There are also plans to be able to run two instance of an app side-by-side. The iconic feature set for the phone included the FaceTime video call for the first time ever, the highest resolution display ever built into a phone and a new design of glass and stainless steel making it the thinnest smartphone at the time.
